Apakah satu nyawa sama berharganya dengan nyawa seribu orang, atau sebaliknya? Ini adalah dilema yang lazim kita temui dalam kisah film. Stowaway mengangkat polemik yang sama dengan latar kisah di tengah ruang angkasa. Stowaway adalah film thriller fiksi ilmiah arahan Joe Penna. Film ini dibintangi beberapa nama besar, yakni Anna Kendrick, Tony Collete, Daniel Dae Kim, serta Shamier Anderson. Film ini dirilis oleh dua platform besar, Netflix dan Amazon Prime. Lalu bagaimana problem klasik ini dikemas dalam kisah filmnya?

Satu kru pesawat angkasa yang diisi oleh 3 orang, Zoe (Kendrick), David (Kim), dan Marina (Collete)  memiliki misi selama 2 tahun di Planet Mars. Setelah sukses take off dari bumi dan bergabung dengan pesawat angkasa di orbit bumi, tanpa diduga mereka menemukan seorang petugas teknis bernama Michael yang secara tak sengaja terbawa dalam pesawat mereka. Masalah mulai muncul ketika perangkat hidup di pesawat rusak dan tak mampu direparasi. Cadangan oksigen yang ada di pesawat untuk melanjutkan perjalanan ke orbit Mars, ternyata hanya cukup untuk 3 orang. Lantas bagaimana mereka memecahkan solusi ini?

Melalui tempo kisah relatif lambat, sejak awal, kita disuguhi secara detil awak kru dari take off hingga mereka bergabung dengan pesawat antar planet di orbit bumi. Semua disajikan begitu nyata dan mengesankan, seolah kita pun ikut turut merasakan dari momen ke momen. Dalam tempo singkat, kita sudah dekat dengan tiga sosok karakternya dan apa tugas mereka. Kejadian sang “penyelundup” sudah tentu sulit untuk dinalar, namun ini mampu ditangkis melalui penjelasan dialognya. Oke, premis bisa kita tolerir, namun pengembangan selanjutnya jelas mudah diantisipasi. Dengan penuh harap, saya menantikan sebuah solusi yang belum pernah kita temui sebelumnya. Ternyata harapan cuma harapan. Tidak ada sesuatu pun yang berbeda dari film-film yang mengangkat dilema sejenis selain prosesnya yang berbeda.

Dengan konsep minimalis serta kasting bertalenta, Stowaway tak mampu membuat pengembangan cerita yang intens dengan resolusi masalah yang klise. Kisahnya jelas membuang talenta para pemainnya, terutama Kendrick yang rasanya belum pernah bermain dalam genre ini sebelumnya. Film bertema survival sejenis, Arctic adalah film arahan sang sineas sebelumnya, yang naskahnya juga tertolong dari penampilan aktornya. Sang sineas jelas punya talenta dan gaya, namun rasanya ia harus mencari naskah yang lebih kuat untuk proyek berikutnya. Dalam ratusan mungkin ribuan film berdilema sejenis, pengorbanan (sisi heroik) memang adalah solusi mudah untuk mengakhiri masalahnya, bahkan film sekelas Avenger’s Endgame. Ini adalah memang sebuah tantangan bagi para penulis naskah untuk mencari sebuah penyegaran bagi solusi masalahnya.
