Texas Chainsaw Massacre (TCM) adalah film reboot sekuel film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre yang diproduksi tahun 1974. Tercatat film ini adalah film ke-9 dari franchise-nya. Tren reboot (sekuel) rupanya cukup kuat menarik pembuat film untuk memproduksi film ini, walau pamor serinya jauh di bawah seri slasher populer, macam Hallowen, Friday the 13th, serta Nigthmare on Elm Street. Digarap oleh sineas yang belum punya nama, David Blue Garcia serta beberapa nama bintang muda, apa yang ingin ditawarkan film ini?

Nyaris lima puluh tahun setelah kejadian pembantaian brutal oleh Leatherface, kota tua Harlow kini bagai kota mati tak bertuan. Sekelompok muda-mudi milenial dari kota besar, berusaha menjual lokasi eksotik ini untuk mengembangkan bisnis mereka di sini. Seorang nenek yang mengaku pemilik satu bangunan rumah panti asuhan bersitegang dengan mereka, yang berujung ia dilarikan ke rumah sakit. Di perjalanan, sang nenek pun menghembuskan nafas terakhir dan satu sosok pria besar misterius yang ikut dan dekat dengan korban, murka dan menghabisi secara brutal semua orang. Sosok ini pun berjalan kembali ke arah kota dengan membawa amarah yang sama.

Mencoba mengekor sukses Halloween, TCM tak banyak menawarkan sesuatu di plotnya. Mirip reboot sekuel Hallowen (2018), plotnya yang sederhana ringkasnya hanya untuk memotivasi leatherface beraksi kembali dengan gaya brutalnya. Hanya saja, Halloween lebih punya kedalaman cerita dan sisi nostalgia, sementara TCM murni hanya aksi jagal. Satu karakter utama dari seri pertamanya (50 tahun lalu) dihadirkan kembali, namun tak mampu memberi sesuatu yang lebih dari kisahnya dan tidak mampu menjawab apa pun. Seperti saya katakan, ini hanya murni aksi pembantaian brutal. Satu adegan mengerikan adalah ketika leatherface beraksi dalam bis dengan alat favoritnya, gergaji mesin! Darah dan potongan tubuh pun berserakan di mana-mana.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre adalah sebuah reboot sekuel medioker dengan semata menjual sajian ultra brutal. Entah karena leatherface kurang populer ketimbang Jason, Myers, atau pun Freddie Krueger, namun ia tak mampu memberi karisma yang cukup untuk “bersimpati” pada sosok ini. Genre slasher sejatinya memang tidak hanya semata aksi brutal dan darah. Setidaknya ada narasi atau argumen kuat yang menjadi alasan mengapa kita harus menonton ini semua. Halloween (2018) sudah memberi sample yang bagus dan “menghibur”, namun untuk subgenrenya Hostel rasanya masih yang terbaik di era modern ini. Patut dicatat, subgenre ini memang bukan untuk semua orang dan tontonan di platform streaming memungkinkan kita menonton filmnya utuh tanpa guntingan sensor. Siap mental saja dengan segala yang tersaji.
