After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future.

The Adam Project adalah film aksi fiksi-ilmiah arahan Shawn Levy. Film rilisan Netflix ini dibintangi sederetan bintang papan atas, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Catherine Keener, Zoe Zaldana, serta bintang muda Walker Scobell. Bermodal sineas dan bintang-bintang besar di atas, rasanya film ini bakal menjanjikan sesuatu yang berbeda. Sayangnya tidak.

Adam cilik – (Scobell) (2022), kini tinggal bersama ibunya (Garner) sepeninggal sang ayah setahun yang lalu. Fisiknya yang lemah dan kecil membuat Adam sering mendapat bahan rundungan rekan sekelasnya. Suatu ketika, seorang laki-laki misterius menyusup ke rumahnya, yang tak lain dan tak bukan adalah Adam sendiri yang berasal dari masa depan (Reynolds) (2050). Mereka berdua harus melawan perusahaan Sorian (2050) yang menggunakan alat mesin waktu untuk kepentingan mereka. Sorian pun mengejar Adam dewasa hingga ke masa kini yang berniat untuk memusnahkan cikal bakal alat mesin waktu ciptaan mereka.

Plot tentang perjalanan waktu memang selalu mengasyikkan untuk ditonton. Opsi cerita bisa kemana pun karena segalanya bisa terjadi sesuai dengan aturan permainan “waktu” yang ditetapkan oleh plotnya. Masing-masing kisah film punya logika plotnya tersendiri. Seri Terminator berbeda dengan seri Back to the Future atau Avenger’s Endgame. The Adam Project mirip dengan Back to the Future. Jika ada perubahan di masa lalu maka masa depan seketika akan berubah. Kerumitan ini pula yang menjadi problema plot Adam Project. Sayangnya, ini tidak bisa diutarakan (spoiler) di sini. Ringkasnya, semua usaha itu untuk apa jika kisahnya sendiri tidak eksis.

Di luar problem di atas, kisahnya sendiri berjalan ringan dan menghibur. Nuansa kehangatan keluarga terasa begitu kental karena memang poin dan pesan ceritanya. Pengunaan tiga dimensi waktu cerita yang berbeda membuat emosi batin dari tiap karakternya berbeda. Ini jarang terjadi di plot film sejenis. Secara visual, untuk level produksinya, pencapaian CGI-nya terlalu lemah dan sangat terlihat artifisial. Bahkan hingga set ruang belakang rumah Adam cilik juga tampak jika dilakukan di dalam studio. Tidak ada sesuatu yang berkesan sama sekali untuk segmen aksi-aksinya.

Dengan menjual deretan kasting topnya, The Adam Project bermain dengan mesin waktu dengan logika yang janggal serta CGI medioker sekalipun terdapat beberapa momen drama yang menyentuh. Penggunaan nama-nama besar yang semuanya pernah bermain dalam genre superhero, tidak mampu dimanfaatkan maksimal. Aktris sekelas Garner nyaris tidak berperan penting dalam filmnya. Dengan kisah dan CGI medioker, mungkin jadi alasan kenapa film ini tidak dirilis teater dan dibeli oleh Netflix. Tidak perlu mesin waktu untuk melihat bahwa film ini akan menjadi box-office bomb (flop).
