The Postcard Killing adalah film thriller kriminal arahan Danis Tanovic. Kisah filmnya diadaptasi dari novel laris berjudul The Postcard Killers karya novelis Swedia, Liza Marklund. Setelah diincar beberapa sineas untuk menggarap filmnya, akhirnya baru di awal tahun 2019, film ini mulai diproduksi. Beberapa bintang papan tengah akhirnya terlibat dalam produksinya, yakni Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Famke Jensen, Naomi Battrick, hingga beberapa aktor dan aktris internasional. Bicara kisahnya, film ini memang memiliki potensi yang luar biasa untuk menjadi sebuah thriller kriminal berkualitas.

Jacon Kanon adalah seorang detektif asal New York yang tertimpa musibah karena putrinya yang baru saja menikah dibunuh secara mengenaskan ketika berbulan madu ke London. Naluri Jacob sebagai seorang detektif membuatnya menginvestigasi kasus ini seorang diri setelah polisi setempat menolaknya bekerja sama. Jacob berkeliling Eropa untuk menelusuri jejak sang pembunuh sekaligus mencegah pembunuhan berikutnya terjadi.

Plotnya sudah terlihat menarik sekali, bukan? Faktanya memang berkata demikian. Sungguh mengejutkan, kisah sekelas ini tidak digarap oleh sineas kenamaan. Kisahnya, memang banyak mengingatkan Se7en arahan David Fincher dengan sisi ketegangan dan misteri yang seimbang. Bedanya, Postcard berlokasi di Eropa dan berskala internasional. Kita di ajak berkeliling Eropa, sejalan penyelidikan Jacob dari satu lokasi ke lokasi lain. Sangat intens dan menarik untuk diikuti. Hanya saja, sejak paruh kedua, plotnya mulai berjalan cepat dan detil kisahnya mulai terasa lepas, banyak hal yang tak mampu kita ikuti. Maklum saja, film ini hanya berdurasi 104 menit. Sementara idealnya berdurasi 2 jam lebih untuk kisah sekompleks ini. Mirip Se7en serta The Silince of the Lamb yang sulit diprediksi, kisahnya juga memiliki twist dari momen ke momen. Namun tidak seperti keduanya, Postcard memiliki ending yang kurang menggigit.

Tak ada yang salah dengan film ini. Semua berjalan baik, hanya saja, semestinya bisa lebih dari ini. Jeffrey Dean Morgan bermain sangat baik, juga Femke Jensen, sekalipun mendapat porsi screen time lebih sedikit. Namun, aktor-aktris lain selain meraka rasanya ada yang bisa bermain lebih baik. Justru aktor Jerman, Joachim Kroll, sebagai inspektur polisi Jerman, mencuri perhatian dengan karismanya. Sementara kasting untuk sang pembunuh, jelas bisa lebih dari ini. Ini hanya masalah bujet. Mengapa studio-studio besar tak mau menggarap film ini, menjadi pertanyaan besar buat saya.

Untuk level produksinya, The Postcard Killing adalah sebuah pencapaian yang mengesankan tapi dengan sineas dan bujet yang lebih mapan, film ini punya potensi mencapai level masterpiece. Ini bukan bentuk kekecewaan, namun hanya menyayangkan. Kisah yang sedemikian baik dan potensial hanya diproduksi dengan level produksi macam ini. Andai saja, David Fincher dan Morgan Freeman terlibat dalam produksi filmnya, sepertinya bakal menjadi sesuatu yang lebih.
