Set in the distant future, a female astronaut, shipwrecked on the long-decimated Earth, must decide the fate of the wasteland's remaining populace.

The Tides adalah film fiksi ilmiah produksi patungan Swiss dan Jerman arahan Tim Fehlbaum. Filmnya dibintangi para kasting internasional, antara lain Nora Arnezeder, Ian Glenn, Sarah-Sofie Baussnina, dan Joel Basman. Film sejenis dengan konsep cerita bumi yang telah ditinggalkan umat manusia dan pindah ke planet lain, bukan kisah baru untuk genrenya. Namun, The Tides memiliki premis yang berbeda dengan film-film sejenis sebelumnya.

Alkisah di masa datang, akibat kerusakan alam, pandemi, serta perang, bumi sudah lagi tak layak huni. Umat manusia pindah ke planet baru bernama Kepler. Untuk mengecek apakah bumi sudah layak dihuni kembali, Kepler mengirim misi ke bumi, Ulysses, namun menghilang tanpa jejak. Setelah belasan tahun, Kepler pun mengirim Ulysses 2 yang berisi kru salah satunya adalah Blake. Pesawat mengalami gangguan saat memasuki atmosfir bumi, Blake yang selamat, mendapati bumi tidak seperti apa yang ia bayangkan.

Tidak seperti film fiksi ilmiah sejenis, kebanyakan kisahnya justru terbalik mengirimkan manusia ke habitat planet yang baru. Dua film yang mendekati adalah Wall-E dan After Earth, walau keduanya memiliki premis berbeda. The Tides memiliki kekuatan terbesar di aspek mise_en_scene, khususnya setting dan atmosfir filmnya yang berkabut nyaris sepanjang film. Nuansa kelam pasca bencana ala Water World juga tersaji dengan sangat baik. Kisahnya sendiri terasa absurd. Motif juga tak jelas dan saling kontradiktif. Isu kolonialisme rasanya menjadi hal yang aneh, toh bukankah bumi juga rumah mereka semua? Mengapa harus ada yang dikorbankan?

The Tides memiliki premis unik untuk genrenya, namun selain setting dan atmosfir filmnya yang mengesankan, eksekusi plotnya terlampau lemah. Lagi-lagi, isu lingkungan memiliki porsi terbesar di film ini, dan lagi-lagi sifat manusia yang serakah menjadi biang keladinya. Melihat situasi terkini, umat manusia kini butuh solusi untuk ke depannya, bukan stempel yang menegaskan bahwa kita memang egois dan serakah dan tak peduli dengan lingkungan.
