The Tomorrow War adalah satu lagi korban pandemi yang kini masih menghantui umat manusia. Film berbujet US$ 200 juta ini yang seharusnya rilis di teater kini hanya bernasib tayang di platform Amazon Prime Video. Sayang sekali. Film ini diarahkan oleh sineas debutan Chris McKay dengan beberapa bintang besar, Chris Pratt, J.K. Simmons, serta Betty Gilpin dan Yyvonne Strahovsky. Dari puluhan film invasi alien sejenis, di mana posisi film ini?

Dalam satu momen piala dunia sepakbola yang disiarkan langsung di seluruh dunia. Warga bumi dikagetkan oleh kemunculan sejumlah orang yang berasal dari masa depan (tahun 2051) untuk mengajak memerangi alien yang bakal memusnahkan umat manusia. Setelah ini, secara berkala umat manusia masa sekarang dikirim ke masa depan. Itu pun belum menunjukkan hasil yang signifikan dengan jumlah korban yang semakin bertambah. Dan Forrester (Pratt) adalah seorang eks pasukan militer khusus, seorang ayah dan guru science, mendapat giliran untuk bertempur di masa depan. Di sana, Dan melihat nasib umat manusia yang sudah diujung tanduk serta sebuah kejutan yang dapat merubah semuanya.

Untuk temanya, film ini nyaris tak ada bedanya dengan plot film sejenis, kecuali permainan waktu. Time travel menjadi sisi penyegar di sini, walau memiliki argumen yang tak jelas. Argumen ilmiah sudah terlontar, namun terasa masih minim dan memaksa. Tigapuluh tahun berselang juga terasa tidak ada perbedaan teknologi yang signifikan. Pesawat tempur, helikopter, senjata api, bahkan bangunan masih sama serupa dengan masa kini. Bisa saja memang, namun terasa janggal mengingat lompatan waktu sejauh itu. Dua puluh tahun yang lalu, video call saja belum dimungkinkan, kini siapa pun bisa melakukannya dengan handphone murah sekali pun.

Untuk aksi dan efek visualnya, memang jauh dari buruk mengingat bujetnya. Aksi-aksi dalam film ini mengingatkan banyak dengan Starship Trooper dan World War Z. Aksi dan ketegangannya pun disajikan amat lumayan. Satu adegan menegangkan yang menjadi favorit saya adalah di tangga darurat bangunan gedung. Film berdurasi panjang 138 menit ini pun juga menyisakan satu segmen aksi di masa sekarang yang lumayan mengejutkan, mirip dengan Alien vs. Predator. Walau film aksi, namun performa kastingnya juga mendukung sisipan drama ayah-anak yang berbeda generasi. Bukan Pratt, tapi adalah Simmons dan Strahovsky yang mencuri perhatian.

Walau motif premisnya dan sisi logika terasa janggal, The Tomorrow War adalah aksi sci-fi bertema invasi alien yang menghibur dan menegangkan. The Tomorrow War memang sayang kita lewatkan jika tak ditonton di teater karena gambar dan tata suara tentunya. Walau begitu, fans genre sci-fi dijamin tak akan mungkin kecewa. Satu hal yang menarik, film ini juga menyisipkan banyak isu dan sisi humanis yang relevan dengan situasi kita sekarang, seperti keluarga, survive, politik, hingga pemanasan global. Pandemi bisa jadi adalah “alien” yang memang menanti umat manusia yang serakah dan mengeksplorasi bumi semaunya untuk memberi pelajaran pada kita di momen yang tepat.
