Studio Pixar kembali menyajikan satu kisah unik yang mengembalikan posisinya sebagai pencetak film-film animasi berkualitas tinggi. Turning Red adalah garapan sineas Tiongkok – Kanada, Domee Shi yang terlibat dalam beberapa produksi film Pixar sebelumnya. Ia pernah meraih Piala Oscar melalui film animasinya pendeknya, Bao, dan tercatat sebagai sineas perempuan pertama yang menggarap film animasi produksi Pixar.

Meilin Lee atau “Mei-mei” (Rosalie Chiang) adalah gadis remaja 13 tahun keturunan Tiongkok yang turun temurun tinggal bersama keluarganya di Ontario, Kanada. Mei membantu keluarganya merawat kuil tertua di kotanya yang sekaligus menjadi obyek wisata di Pecinan. Mei kini di tengah masa pubernya yang menggebu berseberangan dengan sang ibu, Ming (Sandra Oh) yang disiplin dan keras. Pelampiasan Mei adalah bersama tiga sahabat sekolahnya yang tingkah mereka tak jauh dari remaja milenial masa kini. Satu polah Mei, akhirnya membawa ibunya marah dan ia pun merasa dipermalukan di depan rekan-rekan sekolahnya. Pagi harinya, tanpa disadari, Mei berubah menjadi seekor panda merah raksasa.

Bisa saya bilang, kisah film ini adalah salah satu yang terbaik di antara film-film Pixar lainnya. Kisahnya ringan dan sederhana, menghibur, amat membumi, hangat dan di atas segalanya memiliki pesan dan makna yang teramat dalam. Terasa sekali jika kisahnya begitu personal bagi sang sineas yang juga turut menulis naskahnya. Film animasi Irlandia, Wolfwalkers (2020) memiliki kisah serupa mengedepankan mitos dan tradisi lokal kuat, namun konsep cerita Turning Red dan kemasannya jauh berbeda dan lebih kekinian. Sosok panda merah, yang juga simbol emosi Mei, adalah satu konsep brilian yang disajikan begitu efektif dan mengena dalam mengusung pesan kisahnya. Kejutan demi kejutan hingga klimaksnya yang kolosal dan menyentuh mampu memadukan tradisi dan sisi modern dengan amat manis. Turning Red adalah sebuah kisah penuh makna berlapis yang tak cukup dibahas dalam sebuah ulasan singkat.

Dengan kisah yang ringan dan brilian, Turning Red memiliki kedalaman cerita penuh makna yang sejajar dengan film-film masterpiece studio Pixar sebelumnya. Bicara soal visual, jelas tak ada lagi yang perlu dikomentari untuk standar film studio Pixar. Visualnya plus musik dan beberapa nomor rancak mampu mendukung penuh kisahnya yang bermain-main dengan sisi kekinian dan tradisi lokal.  Semuanya sempurna. Turning Red adalah bukan film semata untuk remaja tapi justru adalah film yang ditujukan untuk orang tua. Orang tua yang kolot bakal terasa tertampar dengan film ini. Dunia sudah berubah, orang juga sudah berubah, tiap generasi memiliki perspektifnya sendiri dalam memandang kehidupan. Turning Red mengingatkan kita untuk selalu beradaptasi dengan jaman tanpa melupakan akar tradisi yang kita miliki. What a film. Tahun depan, Piala Oscar kategori film animasi panjang terbaik sudah dalam genggaman.
