I don’t want simple. Simple is boring.

Belum hilang Purple Hearts dari daftar top list, Netflix telah merilis kembali film roman dengan tema nyaris sama. Sebelumnya bicara pernikahan palsu, kini adalah pacar palsu. Wedding Season adalah film komedi romantis produksi India-AS arahan Tom Dey. Film ini dibintangi oleh Suraj Sharma, Pallavi Sharda, Rizwan Manji, Ariana Afsar, serta Sean Kleier. Dengan puluhan film komedi roman sejenis, mampukah Wedding Season berbicara banyak, atau setidaknya lebih baik dari Purple Hearts?

Asha (Sharda) yang gagal dalam hubungan asmaranya, kini pindah ke kota asalnya. Sang adik, Priya (Afsar), sebentar lagi akan menikah, dan Asha mendapat tekanan berat dari orang tuanya untuk segera menikah. Di tengah deadline pekerjaan Asha yang menumpuk, musim menikah pun tiba. Asha pun dijodohkan dengan Ravi (Sharma) oleh orang tua mereka. Untuk menenangkan kedua orang tua mereka, Asha dan Ravi pun berpura-pura untuk pacaran dan selalu muncul dalam pesta nikah. Namun dalam perkembangan, hati Asha pun mencair dan cinta pun mulai bersemi.

Komedi romantis dengan plot sejenis muncul dalam puluhan film dengan kisah yang tak sulit untuk diprediksi arahnya dengan format tipikal struktur tiga babak. Lalu apa pembedanya? Film ini kental dengan nuansa India dengan segala atributnya, termasuk budaya paternalistik yang kental, mindset kuno untuk menikahi seseorang berdasarkan tingkat edukasi dan pekerjaan, serta tentu saja musik! Walau plotnya terkesan klise, namun tidak untuk eksekusi kisahnya. Ini tertolong banyak oleh dua kasting utamanya yang bermain apik dengan chemistry kuat, jauh berbeda dengan Purple Hearts yang nyaris tanpa chemistry. Khususnya, Pallavi Sharda punya potensi lebih di masa datang.

Walau tipikal untuk genrenya, Wedding Season mampu memikat dengan tradisi lokal, penampilan dua bintang utamanya, serta family value yang kental. Secara teknis pun, film ini jauh lebih mapan dari Purple Hearts, khususnya dari segi pengadeganan dan setting. Tercatat satu montage mengesankan menyajikan Asha dan Ravi yang berdansa di pesta nikah dari waktu ke waktu. Dalam satu perspektif, Wedding Season menyajikan satu transisi budaya dari masa lalu ke masa kini. Bukan masalah benar atau salah, namun masa sudah beralih. Tetapi untuk selamanya, kita tidak akan bisa menipu hati kita sendiri. Selamat menonton!
