Wendy adalah film fantasi petualangan arahan Benh Zeitlin yang juga mengarahkan Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) yang sukses meraih 4 nominasi di ajang Academy Awards. Seperti halnya Beasts, Wendy juga menampilkan sejumlah pemain anak yang belum dikenal, yakni Devin France, Yashua Mack, Gage Naquin, dan Gavin Naquin. Ekspektasi penonton tentu tinggi mengingat karya sineas sebelumnya. Apakah Wendy mampu memberikan ekspektasi lebih? Satu hal yang jelas, tak seperti Beasts, kali ini Wendy bukan tontonan yang mudah untuk dicerna.

Alkisah Wendy adalah gadis cilik yang hidup di kota kecil di wilayah selatan. Ia tinggal bersama ibu dan dua kakak kembarnya di restoran kecil milik mereka, yang bersebelahan persis dengan jalur kereta api. Suatu malam, Wendy melihat seorang bocah kecil yang berlarian di atas gerbong kereta api yang tengah berjalan. Oleh karena penasaran, Wendy pun melompat ke kereta, diikuti kedua kakaknya. Mereka pun dibawa ke sebuah tempat unik, jauh di pulau seberang sana di mana mereka tak akan bisa bertambah tua.

Ide kisahnya jelas menarik yang tampak sekali merupakan metafora dari kisah Neverland (Peter Pan) yang tentu kita sudah sangat familliar. Namun, satu hal yang sangat membuat frustasi adalah kisahnya yang sangat absurd. Film yang berkesan untuk anak-anak ini jelas bukan untuk tontonan anak-anak. Dijamin, orang dewasa pun bakal kesulitan membaca filmnya. Bahkan nyaris semua dialognya pun, dituturkan secara puitis yang maknanya tak mudah dipahami. Padahal, poin filmnya sebenarnya sederhana.

Di luar kisah filmnya yang absurd, tak ada keraguan, film ini dimainkan oleh beberapa bintang cilik belum dikenal yang bermain luar biasa. Bocah-bocah ini memiliki talenta di atas rata-rata dan mampu bermain sangat natural. Saya tak bisa membayangkan jika mereka bermain dalam film drama normal, hasilnya pasti akan luar biasa. Mereka semua seperti sudah terbiasa di depan kamera. Tak mudah, berakting dengan dialog seperti apa yang mereka lakukan.

Dengan visualisasi setting yang mengagumkan, Wendy adalah sebuah adaptasi lepas kisah “Peter Pan” yang unik dengan segala absurditasnya untuk menyampaikan pesan yang sederhana. Setting gunung berapi yang demikian hebat serta gerbong kereta api yang panjang, tentu memiliki motif simbolik. Kisah Peter Pan mengajak kita untuk selalu memiliki jiwa yang tulus dan bahagia seperti halnya anak-anak. Sebaliknya, Wendy mengajak kita untuk menerima realita bahwa kita kelak akan beranjak dewasa dan menghadapi banyak masalah. Film ini sejatinya bukan ditujukan untuk anak-anak tapi orang dewasa. Apakah kelak mereka siap untuk melepas anak-anak mereka untuk menggapai mimpinya dengan cara mereka sendiri?
