Aktor Nicholas Cage yang karirnya melejit di era 90-an dan awal 2000-an setelah ia meraih Oscar, kini rupanya hanya tinggal kenangan. Satu-satunya film mainstream besar yang ia bintangi hanyalah sebagai pengisi suara film animasi laris, The Croods. Ia kini lebih banyak berperan dalam film-film medioker dengan kualitas seadanya walau kadang bukan berarti filmnya buruk. Willy’s Wonderland adalah satu di antara film yang dibintangi sang aktor yang terbilang nyeleneh.

Willy’s Wonderland adalah film horor komedi arahan sineas Kevin Lewis dengan Cage sebagai salah satu produsernya. Film berbujet USD 5 juta ini dibintangi sederetan bintang muda yang masih asing di medium film. Wonderland juga menjadi korban dari pandemi yang akhirnya rilis melalui video on demand dan pemutaran teater terbatas.

Sebuah mobil sport mewah yang dibawa pria asing (Cage) mengalami pecah ban di sebuah kota terpencil. Oleh karena pria tersebut tak membawa uang cash, ia akhirnya terpaksa bekerja semalam untuk membersihkan sebuah taman bermain tertutup bernama Willy’s Wonderland. Tak disangka ini ternyata hanyalah sebuah jebakan karena di dalamnya berisi delapan boneka pembunuh pemangsa manusia. Sayangnya, rupanya kali ini mereka memangsa orang yang salah.

Sejak awal, Wonderland memang dimaksudkan sebagai tontonan hiburan murni dengan menggunakan gaya estetik “murahan”. Tapi hasilnya, sungguh di luar dugaan. Abaikan semua logika, walau hanya dengan “efek visual” seadanya dan murah, film ini mampu memberikan sajian konyol yang menghibur, khususnya karena penampilan sang bintang. Baru kali ini, tercatat sang aktor tidak mengeluarkan satu patah kata pun sepanjang filmnya. Tak ada penampilan istimewa dari Cage selain hanya bermain edan dan brutal. Sang aktor pun terlihat menikmati betul perannya termasuk saya yang menonton. Sempat terbersit, ketika sang aktor memukul brutal para boneka monster tersebut, seolah ia melimpahkan semua kekesalannya pada perjalanan karirnya yang menukik. Sejak momen ia meraih Oscar (Leaving Las Vegas) hingga perannya kini. Uniknya, perannya kurang lebih sama-sama gilanya (pemabuk).

Absurd, brutal, dan konyol, Willy’s Wonderland adalah sebuah horor B-Movies unik dengan penampilan langka dari aktor Nicholas Cage. Film ini jelas bukan untuk tontontan awam yang sekadar mencari hiburan, namun juga adalah fans genrenya (cult). Semua memang serba konyol tapi begitu menyenangkan untuk ditonton. Dalam satu adegan, Cage harus bergulat dengan satu boneka gorila yang mengingatkan adegan dalam Ed Wood (Tim Burton) ketika sang aktor tua harus berjibaku dengan seekor gurita (properti) yang ia gerak-gerakkan sendiri untuk sekadar memberikan efek gerak.
