When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world.

Film yang membicarakan dongeng turun-temurun seperti Santa Claus, Jack Frost, Tooth Fairy, serta lainnya sepertinya sudah tak terhitung jumlahnya. Namun belum ada film yang menampilkan semua karakter dongeng ini secara sekaligus. Rise of the Guardians menampilkan hampir seluruh karakter dongeng barat dengan segala atribut dan keunikannya. Dalam kisah filmnya secara singkat, Jack Frost (Pine), harus memimpin rekan-rekannya untuk melawan Pitch (Law) yang berniat membuat seluruh anak-anak hidup dalam kegelapan dan rasa takut. Seperti film anak-anak lazimnya, kisahnya berjalan ringan serta ending yang tak sulit ditebak.

Kisahnya harus diakui memang cukup menarik dan menyentuh namun budaya penonton kita yang tidak akrab dengan karakter-karakter dongeng barat ini membuat “jarak” antara penonton dengan filmnya. Terlebih latar belakang masing-masing tokoh memang tidak ditonjolkan kecuali karakter Jack Frost. Agak terasa janggal juga melihat karakter-karakter besar dan populer ini muncul dalam satu kisah. Visualisasi masing-masing tokoh pun mungkin tidak seperti yang dibayangkan orang namun ini rasanya bukan masalah.

Awal kisah yang sedikit membosankan pada awalnya sedikit demi sedikit mulai menarik sejalan kisahnya. Lambat laun penonton mulai bisa bersimpati dengan tokoh-tokohnya. Tema “team works” sejenis ini memang bukan hal baru lagi namun film ini memiliki poin berbeda yakni masalah eksistensi. Sejalan dengan bertambahnya umur anak-anak menjadi dewasa mereka semakin tidak percaya dengan tokoh-tokoh dongeng ini lagi. Mereka bisa menghilang seperti Jack Frost yang tak bisa terlihat di mata manusia. Film ini secara sederhana mengingatkan akan kekuatan imajinasi dan harapan yang membuat kita bisa eksis dalam kehidupan ini.

Rise of the Guardians bisa jadi memang untuk tontonan anak-anak, namun penonton dewasa rasanya bisa menikmati film ini lebih baik. Problem para Guardians adalah problem orang dewasa. Dengan gambar dan sekuen aksi yang memanjakan mata rasanya film ini sudah cukup menghibur. Namun, untuk bersaing dengan film-film animasi lain dalam ajang Academy Awards tahun depan rasanya masih sulit.
