Road House adalah film aksi yang merupakan remake dari film bertitel sama (1989) yang digarap oleh Doug Liman. Uniknya, film ini juga kembali diproduseri Joel Silver yang memproduksi film-film aksi legendaris 1980-an, seperti Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, hingga Predator. Sementara Liman sendiri kita tahu pernah menggarap film-film aksi berkelas, seperti The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs Smith, serta Edge of Tomorrow. Roadhouse dibintangi Jake Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor, J. D. Pardo, Arturo Castro, hingga Billy Magnussen. Bermodal, sineas, produser, serta nama besar pemainnya, mampukah Road House bersanding dengan film-film aksi berkualitas sebelumnya?

Ellwood Dalton (Gyllenhaal) adalah mantan petarung besar UFC yang traumatik dan tidak memiliki pekerjaan tetap. Akhirnya, Dalton menerima pekerjaan sebagai penjaga bar bernama Roadhouse di wilayah pantai Florida. Tak sulit baginya untuk menghadapai situasi hingar bingar dan para pemabuk yang menganggu kenyamanan tamu-tamu bar. Kehadiran Dalton rupanya membuat pengusaha lokal benama Ben (Magnusson) terusik bisnis ilegalnya, termasuk polisi korup di belakangnya. Dengan berbagai cara, Ben pun tak mampu mengatasi Dalton, sang ayah lalu mengutus orang kepercayaannya, Knox (McGregor) yang liar dan brutal untuk mengatasi ini.

Komparasi dengan film aslinya sulit dilakukan karena saya sudah tak ingat betul versi lamanya. Satu hal yang jelas, kisahnya sama sekali tidak membekas dan inferior jika dibandingkan film-film ikonik yang diproduseri Joel Silver di atas. Membandingkan Roadhouse versi remake-nya pun juga sama, sekalipun film ini masih memiliki “roh” film-film aksi di masanya (80’s) yang penuh baku hantam, dalam dunia cerita yang korup dan chaos. Kisahnya adalah tipikal formula aksi yang tak sulit untuk diantisipasi. Si gadis cilik pemilik toko buku, Charlie, memberi tribute sosok Dalton layaknya kisah western, di mana sang jagoan datang untuk menolong orang-orang yang terzalimi. Ditutup dengan sang jagoan yang berkuda berjalan ke arah matahari terbenam.

Kelebihan Roadhouse memang bukan di kisah bahkan aksinya, namun adalah penampilan memikat dua bintangnya. Gyllenhaal bukan pertama kalinya bermain sebagai petarung (Southpaw, 2015), namun bedanya kali ini adalah ia sungguh bertarung dalam gaya tarung bebas yang profesional. Bahkan dalam satu adegan pertarungan kilas-balik, konon adegan tersebut sungguh-sungguh dilakukan shot on location di depan ribuan penonton. Untuk urusan akting, sang aktor tentu tak lagi kisa sangsikan, namun fighting adalah urusan yang berbeda, dan ia mampu tampil meyakinkan. Sementara Connor McGregor, sang mantan juara AFC pun tampil sempurna sesuai perannya, sebagai tukang pukul yang edan, ganas, dan brutal. Pertarungan di antara keduanya tentu adalah yang dinanti-nanti para fansnya.

Road House adalah film remake dengan tipikal plot aksi 1980-an, bedanya? Performa langka Jake Gyllenhaal dan penampilan eksplosif, Connor McGregor. Sang atlit tenar ini sungguh tampil mencuri perhatian di setiap adegannnya. McGregor jelas tampil tidak buruk dan bisa jadi, ini adalah awal karirnya di dunia film. Sementara bagi sang sineas dan produser, rasanya tidak banyak memberi efek yang berarti bagi karir mereka. Lalu Gyllenhaal? Salah satu aktor favorit saya ini belakangan lebih banyak berperan dalam film-film aksi yang kurang mengangkat kemampuan olah perannya. Sang aktor memiliki potensi jauh lebih dari ini, jika mendapat peran yang pas.
