Menonton film ini mengingatkan banyak pada film-film aksi thriller spionase karya Tony Scott serta Paul Greengras. Kisahnya sudah terlalu biasa sekalipun unsur ketegangan dan adegan aksi yang dinamis menjadi menu utama filmnya.  Matt Weston (Reynolds) adalah penjaga salah satu ‘safe house’ CIA di Cape Town, Afrika Selatan. Safe House adalah tempat perlindungan rahasia bagi para saksi atau tahanan CIA.  Suatu ketika seorang pembelot nomor satu mantan CIA, Tobin Frost (Washington) masuk menjadi tahanan. Tak lama safe house tersebut diserang oleh sekelompok pihak yang juga menginginkan Tobin.  Matt, tanpa ia duga terjebak dalam situasi luar biasa antara keselamatan dirinya dan prosedur yang mengharuskan ia melindungi Tobin.
Ketegangan demi ketegangan terus bergulir tanpa nyaris jeda dengan tempo cepat. Lokasi cerita berpindah-pindah dengan penuturan informasi begitu cepat layaknya plot Bourne. Kisah spionase seperti ini kadang mengindahkan logika awam, karena semua aksi dan gerak sekecil apapun tidak mengenal jarak, berkat bantuan teknologi tinggi dan semacamnya. Namun ada beberapa hal kecil yang mengganjal. Ketika Matt mengerti secara pasti bahwa ada orang dalam yang terlibat mengapa ia masih ke pergi ke safe house CIA. Bisa jadi ada informasi yang saya lewatkan, tapi manuver ini sungguh tidak masuk akal untuk orang secerdas Matt , dan setelahnya segalanya mudah diprediksi. 
Washington dan Reynolds bermain sangat baik seperti biasa. Washington tipikal dengan peran-peran seperti ini, dan sangat pas bermain sebagai Tobin yang dingin dan keras. Reynold pun mampu mengimbangi dengan baik sebagai agen muda yang selalu gelisah dan tegang sepanjang film.
Bisa jadi ingin mengikuti gaya seperti Bourne, editing dan gerakan kamera yang “kasar” plus tone gambar yang “grainy”, namun pilihan angle-nya dan seringkali close-up, membuat mata sedikit tidak nyaman, terutama pada adegan aksi yang cepat, seperti adegan car-chase di sepertiga awal film. Cukup seru dan menegangkan memang namun sayangnya tidak seperti Bourne, tidak didukung ilustrasi musik yang kuat.

Tak ada sesuatu yang baru di Safe House, film ini sekelas dibawah film-film thriller sejenis karya Tony Scott dan dua kelas dibawah seri “Bourne”. Dengan mengandalkan kahandalan dua aktornya yang bermain baik dan kisah yang menegangkan film ini rasanya sudah cukup untuk menghibur penonton. (B-)
