Saya masih ingat betul, memiliki ekspektasi rendah sebelum menonton Gnomeo & Juliet (2011), namun di luar dugaan, film ini banyak memberi kejutan melalui kisah roman yang manis plus segmen musikal yang magis melalui lagu-lagu yang dilantunkan Elton John. Unsur komedi, roman, dan aksi berpadu dengan sempurna dalam adaptasi lepas Romeo & Juliet ini. Ketika melihat trailer sekuelnya, Sherlock Gnomes, film ini tampak sudah tak meyakinkan walau filmnya diisi suara oleh aktor-aktris papan atas, macam Johnny Depp, James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Caine, serta penyanyi tenar Mary J. Blige. Apa sebab?

      Tempo plot sudah bergulir dengan cepat sejak awal dengan mengenalkan sosok Sherlock dan Watson. Di lain tempat, Gnomeo dan Juliet bersama seluruh anggota klan mengikuti pemilik mereka yang pindah ke London. Belum sempat beradaptasi, Gnomeo dan Juliet mendapati seluruh anggota klan mereka hilang secara misterius. Sherlock dan Watson yang juga ada di sana segera mengikuti petunjuk untuk mencari  mereka. Gnomeo dan Juliet terlibat masuk dalam sebuah petualangan seru, di tengah perseteruan antara Sherlock dengan musuh abadinya, Moriarty. Tempo plot cepat ini rupanya yang menjadi masalah besar filmnya.

      Seperti halnya seri pertama, kali ini filmnya menyajikan adaptasi lepas dari kisah Sherlock Holmes, walau hanya kisah kulitnya saja, yakni perseteruan antara Sherlock vs Moriarty. Adegan demi adegan bergulir cepat tanpa pengenalan cukup khususnya untuk sosok-sosok baru ini. Penonton juga diajak berpetualang ke dunia “gnomes” yang amat berbeda dari seri pertamanya, berpindah dari satu tempat ke tempat lain. Sulit sekali untuk bisa masuk ke karakter-karakter baru ini, terlebih dengan alur plotnya yang cepat. Kisahnya menjadi terasa datar tanpa emosi dan kita sulit untuk peduli dengan apa yang terjadi. Sisi komedi pun terasa kurang menggigit, karena Sherlock dan Watson pun terhitung adalah sosok yang serius. Berbeda sekali dengan seri pertamanya, baik kisah, tokoh, dan konfliknya mampu kita rasakan begitu dalam dan menyentuh. Tak ada momen dramatik sama sekali dalam sekuelnya ini.

      Sherlock Gnomes kehilangan unsur magis seri pertamanya melalui plotnya serta banyak menyia-nyiakan potensi aktor-aktris bintang yang menjadi pengisi suaranya. Diantara semua, sosok Sherlock yang diisi suara oleh Depp menjadi pusat perhatian, yang gayanya juga mirip dengan sang aktor. Segmen lagu dan musik yang menjadi kekuatan seri pertama nyaris hilang. Hanya satu segmen musikal rancak yang dilantukan oleh Irine (Blige) cukup membangkitkan suasana, namun jelas tak banyak menolong filmnya. Bagi yang belum menonton Gnomeo & Juliet, coba tonton film ini, dan kamu pasti akan mendapati sesuatu hal yang berkesan, walau kisahnya tak orisinal, namun pesan tentang ketulusan cinta dikemas dengan begitu manis.
