In the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.

Konon sang sineas kawakan, Martin Scorsese telah mempersiapkan konsep Silence sudah sejak lebih dari 25 tahun yang lalu. Setelah beberapa kali gagal hingga akhirnya pada tahun 2015 lalu film ini akhirnya diproduksi. Film ini diadaptasi dari novel berjudul sama (1966) karya Shusaku Endo dengan dibintangi oleh Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Nesson, serta Tadanobu Asano.

Alkisah pendeta senior Ferreira hilang dalam tugas misionarisnya di wilayah Jepang pada periode abad 17. Isu yang beredar adalah semua pendeta dan warga Jepang penganut paham kristen dieksekusi oleh otoritas setempat. Dua pendeta muda murid dari Ferreira, yakni Rodriguez dan Garupe memaksa untuk mencari seniornya ke wilayah Jepang yang sangat berbahaya bagi jiwa mereka. Dengan dibantu Kichijiro mereka berlayar ke Jepang melalui Cina. Sesampainya di sana semua kabar burung sebelumnya ternyata benar adanya dan mereka harus bersembunyi agar tidak tertangkap oleh penguasa lokal.

Kisahnya sekilas agak mirip dengan The Last Temptation of Christ karya Scorsese beberapa dekade silam. Kisahnya berjalan sangat lambat dengan dialog-dialog sederhana dan tidak hingga separuh film, kisahnya mulai berjalan lebih hidup. Film berdurasi hampir 3 jam ini bukan hanya soal tes iman dua pendeta muda ini namun juga tes kebugaran bagi penonton untuk bisa lolos dari rasa bosan dan menahan untuk tidak ke kamar kecil. Secara estetik film ini sangat kontras dengan film-film Scorcese sebelumnya yang kemasannya begitu dinamis kini berganti dengan nuansa keheningan melalui shot-shot statis yang tergambar dengan amat kuat. Beberapa adegan brutal juga tersaji langsung dan Scorcese mampu membuat penonton sama frustasinya dengan Rodriguez.

Silence bukan hanya proyek personal sang sineas semata namun lebih dari itu merupakan gambaran sikap toleransi dan fanatisme umat beragama yang rasanya masih relevan hingga sekarang. Entah sang sineas mengambil sikap untuk memilih pihak mana, semuanya serba abu-abu, semuanya bisa benar dan bisa juga salah. Seperti tersaji dalam shot dan narasi penutup, sineas bisa jadi ingin memberikan pernyataan bahwa suatu kepercayaan sejatinya adalah hubungan personal antara manusia dengan Tuhannya, bukan milik kelompok atau institusi. Sikap pendeta Ferreira bisa pula kita baca sebagai bentuk toleransi untuk menghormati ajaran lain tanpa harus memaksakan apa yang kita anut, atau bisa pula tidak. Seperti narasi penutup, hubungan kita secara personal dengan sang pencipta hanyalah Tuhan yang bisa tahu. Dari semua film-film karya Scorsese rasanya film ini yang memiliki pesan spiritual yang paling kuat sebagai bentuk perenungan tentang kehidupan yang telah kita jalani.
