In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists find that their lives will never be the same.

Studio Illuminations Entertainment (IE) kini tengah panas-panasnya. IE dikenal mampu memproduksi film animasi dengan bujet relatif rendah ketimbang studio animasi pesaingnya namun seluruh filmnya sukses luar biasa, seperti Minions tahun lalu meraup sukses lebih dari US$ 1.1 milyar. Baru beberapa bulan lalu The Secret Life of Pets sukses besar-besaran dan kini mereka sudah merilis film terbarunya, Sing. Studio IE dikenal melalui karakter-karakternya yang unik serta kisah ringan dengan lebih menonjolkan sisi komedi. Melalui Sing, IE mencoba menggunakan pendekatan yang berbeda, yakni dominasi lagu dan musik. Tak kurang setidaknya 85 lagu pop dan klasik muncul di filmnya walau tak semuanya disajikan utuh.

Pemilik teater pertunjukan si koala Buster Moon memiliki ambisi besar untuk menyelamatkannya dari kebangkrutan dengan mengadakan kontens menyanyi. Akibat sang sekretaris tua salah ketik jumlah hadiah $10.000 menjadi $100.000 peminat menjadi membludak. Beberapa talenta berbakat muncul seperti si babi Rosita, si gajah muda Meena, si gorila Johnny, si rocker landak Ash, hingga si tikus pemusik jalanan, Mike. Mereka harus membagi waktu dengan kegiatan dan segala masalah mereka. Sementara Buster memiliki masalah lain yang tidak kalah peliknya.

Dari sisi cerita, rasanya Sing adalah yang terlemah dibanding film-film IE lainnya. Kisahnya tampak sekali memaksa dengan tempo yang cepat karena banyaknya tokoh yang terlibat. Kisah meloncat dari satu tokoh ke tokoh lain dengan problem mereka yang disajikan ringan dengan penyelesaian yang mudah pula. Agak aneh melihat seorang ibu dengan 25 anak bisa membuat alat demikian cangggih sebagai pengganti babysitter. Memaksa sekali. Bahkan sisi komedinya juga kurang menggigit. Ok lupakan saja namanya juga film anak-anak. Semua ini ternyata kelak mengarah ke grand finale yang maha hebat.

Dari judulnya saja sudah tampak jika lagu dan musik adalah menu utama film ini. Tak ada momen dan adegan yang luput dari lagu dan musik. Beberapa nomor lawas dan populer terlantun dengan amat manis mengiringi adegan demi adegan dan sebagian besar dibawakan sendiri oleh para pemain bintangnya, seperti Scarlett Johansson, Reese Whiterspoon, Seth Mc Farlane, serta lainnya. Beberapa nomor klasik macam The Beatles (Carry that Weight) dan Queen (Under Pressure) mengiringi montage dengan elegan. Momen yang ditunggu pun akhirnya tiba. Sebuah pertunjukan klimaks yang dijamin sangat menghibur dan memuaskan siapa pun dengan beberapa momen menyentuh.

Berbanding terbalik dengan kisahnya yang sangat lemah dan memaksa, Sing memiliki momen musik dan lagu salah satu yang terbaik yang pernah ada. Momen emas filmnya ada di penghujung film. Bersabarlah sebelum menuju kesana. Sayang sekali jika saja naskahnya lebih baik film ini rasanya bisa berbicara lebih banyak. Jika Anda suka musik tidak ada yang satu alasan apapun untuk tidak menonton film ini. Enjoy!
