Spotlight diambil dari kisah nyata tim investigasi berita spotlight di surat kabar The Boston Globes yang mengungkap skandal pelecehan seksual anak yang melibatkan para pastur di wilayah Boston. Kisah filmnya bermula ketika editor baru mereka, Martin Baron (Liv Schreiber) memberi arahan baru pada tim spotlight untuk mengungkap kasus lama yang melibatkan gereja. Walter Robinson (Michael Keaton) bersama tiga rekannya, Sacha (Rachel McAdams), Michael (Mark Ruffalo), dan Matt (Brian D’Arcy James) mencoba menggali info satu demi satu dari petunjuk yang ada  dan menemukan fakta-fakta mengejutkan yang tidak hanya mengungkap individu dalam jumlah besar namun juga institusi Gereja yang melindungi mereka.

Investigasi jurnalis macam ini memang bukan hal baru dalam dunia film, satu contoh yang paling sempurna adalah All the President’s Men (1976) serta The Insider (1999). Spotlight menawarkan sebuah tema yang relatif masih hangat dan kontroversial di awal milenium lalu. Kisahnya menawarkan alur yang sangat rinci sejak awal hingga proses investigasi berjalan yang dikemas ringan, menarik, dan menggugah menit demi menit. Investigasi yang selalu beralih lokasi dan setiap momen nyaris ada informasi baru yang membuat cerita berjalan lebih intens dari sebelumnya. Tidak banyak kejutan memang namun proses inilah yang menjadi kekuatan besar filmnya disamping kastingnya.

Sangat menyenangkan melihat bagaimana sekumpulan aktor papan atas macam Michael Keaton, Stanley Tuccy, Rachel McAdams, hingga Mark Ruffalo bermain dalam level terbaik mereka sekaligus tampak natural dalam filmnya. Dialog-dialog meluncur dengan lugas dan tegas, saking larutnya kita masuk dalam cerita membuat kita tidak menyadari jika ini hanya aktor dan aktris yang tengah bermain dalam perannya. Diantara mereka tercatat Ruffalo yang bermain paling ekspresif sebagai Michael Rezendes. Sayangnya Stanley Tucci yang berperan sebagai pengacara Mitchell Garabedien tidak dominan padahal dia bermain sangat baik dan sempurna untuk peran ini.

Spotlight menawarkan sebuah tema yang kuat dengan dukungan serangkaian talenta papan atas namun bukan yang terbaik untuk genre jurnalis sejenis. Para jurnalis ini digambarkan sebagai orang-orang profesional dan berdedikasi tinggi untuk menyampaikan kebenaran pada publik dengan segala resikonya. Sebuah sikap yang patut dicontoh dan bisa menginspirasi para jurnalis kita di tengah carut-marutnya kondisi bangsa ini. Kita tidak butuh pahlawan namun cukup orang-orang biasa seperti mereka yang peduli dan mampu membedakan yang benar dan yang salah.
