In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter.

Apakah mungkin kejadian yang sama bisa terulang kembali? Taken 2 menggunakan formula yang nyaris mirip dengan film pertamanya dengan premis plot yang sangat konyol dan memaksa. Umat muslim kini demikian mudah menjadi favorit untuk peran-peran antagonis. Satu hal yang sangat memuakkan. Jika peran antagonis tidak diperlihatkan mereka muslim atau dari mana pun rasanya bukan menjadi masalah. Ok ok.. let’s not make this a problem and go back to the plot. Alkisah Bryan Mills (Neeson) yang tengah betugas di Istambul dikejutkan oleh kedatangan istrinya, Lenore (Janssen)dan putrinya, Kim (Grace). Di tempat lain, Murad, ayah dari salah satu penculik Kim di film pertama, bertekad membalas dendam pada Bryan dan keluarganya. Cerita selanjutnya pasti sudah bisa Anda terka.

Seperti film pertamanya kisahnya berjalan cepat ketika konflik mulai terjadi. Tidak seperti Taken yang terasa sangat menegangkan namun kali ini tanpa ketegangan yang berarti. Unsur waktu yang dulu menjadi tolak ukur kini tak lagi ada. Kim yang dulu sangat pasif (korban penculikan) kini sangat aktif mendukung jalan plotnya. Bahkan Kim yang baru belajar mengendarai mobil mendapatkan pelajaran menyetir berharga dari ayahnya. Karakter Lenore yang dulu sama sekali tidak aktif kini sedikit mendapat porsi. Sementara Bryan masih sama seperti dulu.. “what I do best, “ kata Bryan. Kill, kill, and kill. Motif cerita yang tak sekuat dulu membuat aksinya menjadi terasa hambar.

Taken 2 semata-mata hanya mencoba mendompleng sukses film pertamanya. Jika berhasil mungkin Taken 3 kembali dibuat dan tak perlu penulis naskah handal untuk menulis sekuelnya. Plot filmnya jelas terlihat terlalu memaksa dan tidak menghibur seperti film pertamanya. Setting di Istanbul juga tak membuat filmnya lebih menarik. Taken dibuat dengan bujet $26,5 juta dan sukses luar biasa sementara Taken 2 berbujet $80 juta. Sebuah angka yang terlalu fantastis untuk film biasa seperti ini dan menyia-nyiakan bakat aktor sekelas Neeson yang jarang tampil buruk.
