Thanksgiving adalah film horor slasher arahan Eli Roth, sobat dekat Quentin Tarantino. Roth beberapa kali memproduksi film-film aksi brutal, macam Cabin Fever dan Hostel. Uniknya pula, Thanksgiving adalah film ketiga yang diproduksi versi feature-nya, setelah Machete (2010) dan Hobo with a Shotgun (2011). Teaser fiktif ketiganya muncul dalam film dwilogi, Grindhouse (2007) arahan Robert Rodriguez dan Tarantino. Film ini dibintangi Patrick Dempsey, Nell Verlaque, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Rick Hoffman, serta Gina Gershon. Walau diproduksi terhitung telat, apakah Thanksgiving mampu memberi sesuatu yang segar bagi genrenya seperti sebelumnya?

Kisahnya bermula pada peristiwa berdarah pada malam Thanksgiving di Kota Plymouth, Massachusetts. Ratusan orang mengantri pesta diskon “Black Friday” di luar toserba Rightmart yang memaksa masuk secara brutal. Beberapa orang terluka hingga tewas mengenaskan dalam peristiwa naas tersebut. Setahun kemudian, segelintir orang yang terlibat dalam peristiwa silam ditemukan tewas secara brutal. Putri dari pemilik Rightmart, Jessica (Verlaque) dan rekan-rekannya pun mendapat pesan misterius dari sang pembunuh yang berniat untuk membalaskan dendam. Korban terus berjatuhan, Jessica pun mencoba mencari tahu dalang pembunuh yang mengincar keluarga dan rekan-rekannya.

Dari titelnya, formula plotnya jelas mirip dengan film-film slasher klasik yang mengambil momen hari special, macam Halloween dan Friday the 13th. Aksi-aksi brutalnya pun sama dan sang antagonis juga menggunakan topeng serta menggunakan senjata khas berupa kampak. Hanya motif sang pembunuh yang membedakan dua film di atas dengan Thanksgiving. Dari konsep dan ide awalnya, jelas para pembuat filmnya tak yakin jika kelak film-film teaser tersebut bakal diproduksi. Rasanya mereka hanya bermain-main dengan ide liar yang ada di otak mereka. Namun siapa sangka, hasilnya jauh dari kata buruk. Dibanding Machete dan Hobo, Thanksgiving diproduksi jauh lebih mapan dengan bujet lumayan besar (USD 15 juta) untuk genrenya. Sebagai selipan “humor”, beberapa aksi brutalnya pun merupakan tribute dari teaser aslinya.

Tipikal plot “whodunit” macam ini kebanyakan tidak sulit diantisipasi kisahnya. Plotnya lazimnya selalu mengarahkan penonton ke para calon tersangka, namun Thanksgiving sedikit berbeda dengan bermain-main melalui tempo cepat. Penonton seolah tidak diberi waktu berpikir karena aksi demi aksi bergerak menerus. Rasa penasaran selalu terusik dan kita selalu diberi kejutan dengan apa yang bakal terjadi. Aksi brutalnya pun tak tanggung-tanggung, dan sang sineas, seperti kita tahu, memang piawai untuk urusan yang satu ini. Organ tubuh bertebaran dan kepala bergelindingan di mana-mana. Tinggal seberapa kuat kamu menonton adegan-adegan brutalnya.

Walau bukan hal baru bagi genrenya, Thanksgiving mampu memberikan hiburan berkelas melalui naskah solid, aksi brutal, serta selipan humor sang sineas. Satu-satunya hal yang amat menganggu adalah guntingan sensor. Saya masih ingat betul Saw X (rilis sebulan lalu) yang menyajikan aksi berdarah demikian eksplisit dan brutal, bisa lolos dari guntingan sensor, mengapa sekarang tidak? Toh, ratingnya sama-sama 17+ (Dewasa). Jika Saw X dipotong pun tidak ada guntingan yang terlihat kasar, namun potongan gambar Thanksgiving benar-benar menganggu kenyamanan. Mengapa film ini dirilis di sini jika bakal dipotong macam ini? Ini sudah untuk kesekian kalinya.
