Apa yang hebat dari film bisu? Pada era jayanya sebelum film bicara muncul, film-film bisu berkualitas tinggi pernah diproduksi dengan beragam genre, seperti film-film karya Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffitth, Buster Keaton, hingga film fiksi ilmiah megah, Metropolis. Tanpa film bisu, film bicara tak akan pernah ada. Merupakan impian saya sejak lama untuk bisa merasakan menonton film bisu di bioskop, The Artist rupanya mampu mewujudkan ini. The Artist mengambil latar cerita di masa transisi era film bisu ke era film bicara, yakni pada akhir dekade 20-an. Film ini seperti halnya, Singin in the Rain (1952), mampu menggambarkan problem-problem yang terjadi pada era transisi ini dari sudut pandang para bintangnya melalui kisah roman yang menyentuh.

Kisah filmnya seperti film-film era bisu lazimnya sangat sederhana, roman yang klise dan melodramatik, serta tak lupa happy ending. George Valentin (Dujardin) adalah superstar era film bisu sementara Peppy Miller (Bejo) adalah gadis muda riang fans berat George yang memimpikan menjadi bintang film. Ketika teknologi suara datang, Valentine dengan egonya menolak untuk ikut arus. Karena pihak studio tak memihaknya, George mengeluarkan seluruh uangnya untuk memproduksi film bisu yang dibintanginya sendiri. Sementara era transisi jutru membawa berkah bagi Peppy, karirnya semakin menanjak hingga ia menjadi superstar. Film baru George gagal total dan ia jatuh miskin, istrinya pun meninggalkannya. Peppy yang karirnya ditolong oleh George berusaha membantu sang aktor.

Sineas menggunakan semua teknik yang lazim digunakan film bisu pada masanya, seperti format fullscreen, warna hitam-putih, speed motion, penggunaan intertitle penjelas dialog dan scene, hingga dominasi musik latar. Namun ada beberapa teknik yang tak lazim digunakan, seperti menahan shot agak lama, tracking shot mengambil close up wajah, frame miring (canted frame), serta penggunaan suara efek ketika adegan George bermimpi buruk. Entah ini bentuk kompromi penonton modern namun teknik-teknik tersebut digunakan memiliki maksud yang kuat. Shot-shot brilyan beberapa kali tampak, seperti pada adegan ketika George membakar filmnya sendiri, dan terlihat bagaimana api (filmnya) hampir membinasakannya.

Semua nilai artistik dalam The Artist tersebut tak berarti apa-apa tanpa akting yang sangat brilyan Jean Dujardin. Bermain tanpa dialog dengan dominasi ekspresi mimik wajah serta sikap tubuh jelas bukan hal mudah namun ia melakukannya dengan sempurna. Tak ada komentar lagi untuk penampilan memukaunya serta senyumnya yang mematikan. Sementara Bérénice Bejo juga tak kalah dengan tampil energik, riang dan penuh tawa, ia tampil tidak hanya sebagai pemanis belaka. Satu lagi pencapaian istimewa jelas pada ilustrasi musik yang diaransemen Ludovic Bource yang mampu menghanyutkan suasana tiap adegannya. Namun beberapa penggal musik memang seperti tak asing di telinga.

The Artist adalah film bagi para pecinta film sejati. Film ini mampu membawa kita ke era dimana medium ini mampu menghibur penonton hanya dengan bahasa visual semata. Sayangnya tak terlalu banyak animo penonton kita terbukti hanya segelintir penonton di bioskop. Sayang sekali, jika Anda pecinta film sejati, jangan sampai melewatkan film ini di bioskop, Anda bisa kembali ke era silam merasakan apa yang dirasakan penonton kala itu. Sebuah pengalaman yang mengagumkan.
