Steven Spielberg beberapa dekade lalu bisa dibilang tidak memiliki lawan. Dari Jaws, E.T, seri Indiana Jones, Jurrasic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, hingga Jurrasic Park membuktikan bahwa ia adalah sutradara handal film berbagai genre dan tahu benar apa yang diinginkan penonton. Beberapa filmnya pada dekade ini masih memperlihatkan kepiawaian sang sineas namun sepertinya gayanya sudah terlalu lawas. Bridge of Spies, film terakhirnya, sukses secara kritik dan komersil sekalipun sudah tidak lagi seperti masa jayanya dulu. Melalui film terbarunya, The BFG, Spielberg mengadaptasi novel era 80-an karya Roald Dahl, dan hasilnya ternyata mengecewakan.

Akisah Sophie, seorang bocah perempuan yatim piatu secara tak sengaja melihat seorang raksasa di saat imsonia pada dini hari. Sophie dibawa sang raksasa ke negeri raksasa. Di sana Sophie lebih mengenal sosok raksasa, yang memiliki nama BFG (Big Friendly Giant) yang ternyata suka menangkap “mimpi”. Sementara di negeri tersebut terdapat raksasa lain yang ternyata menyukai daging manusia dan mereka mulai mengendus kehadiran Sophie.

Entah apa seperti apa novelnya namun faktanya film ini membosankan setengah mati. Sejak awal kisahnya seolah tidak memiliki tujuan yang jelas dan setelahnya kisahnya justru makin tak jelas. Sebenarnya untuk apa BFG menangkap mimpi. Raksasa-raksasa lain yang malang juga tidak memiliki tujuan yang jelas dan rasanya juga tidak mengancam umat manusia selain Sophie yang secara sengaja dibawa kesana. Kondisi disana sebenarnya baik-baik saja dan tidak ada pihak manapun yang terancam. Plot akhir menyangkut Ratu Inggris juga rasanya aneh dan sama sekali tidak bermotif. Entah bagaimana semuanya serba tak jelas dan membingungkan.

Rylance jelas dipilih karena perannya yang gemilang di Bridge of Spies namun sekalipun ia bermain baik tidak mampu mengangkat filmnya. Demikian pula dengan si cilik Ruby Barnhill juga bermain sangat baik sebagai Sophie. Efek visual juga terlihat amat artifisial pada tokoh-tokoh raksasa dan latar di negeri raksasa. Ilustrasi musik garapan kolaborator tetap Spielberg, John Williams, sekalipun sempurna tetap tidak mampu mengangkat filmnnya.

The BFG masih memiliki sisa-sisa kejayaan Spielberg namun tema filmnya sudah terlalu kuno untuk penonton masa kini. Spielberg harus mencoba formula lain untuk mendekati penonton modern. Tiga tahun ke depan ia masih produktif sebagai sutradara termasuk proyek Indiana Jones 5 di tahun 2019. Kita lihat apakah Spielberg, sang legenda, mampu bersaing dengan sineas-sineas yang lebih muda?
