Two sisters grieving the recent death of their mother without receiving much support from their father, a therapist who is dealing with his own grief, must face a supernatural entity that feeds on the suffering of its victims.

The Boogeyman adalah film horor arahan Rob Savage yang diadaptasi dari kisah horor pendek karya Stephen King (1973). Film ini dibintangi oleh Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, dan David Dastmalchian. Walau idenya sudah ada sejak jauh sebelum pandemi, namun film ini baru diproduksi tahun 2022 dan konon awalnya akan dirilis untuk platform streaming. Kisah tentang monster di balik pintu kloset telah banyak diangkat layar lebar, adakah sesuatu yang istimewa kali ini?

Sadie (Thatcher) dan Sawyer (Blair) adalah sepasang kakak beradik yang berduka sepeninggal ibu mereka yang tewas karena kecelakaan. Demikian pula dengan sang ayah, Will Harper (Messina) yang seorang psikolog. Suatu ketika, seorang lelaki misterius datang meminta tolong untuk berkonsultasi. Melihat gelagat buruk, Will lalu menelpon polisi, namun Sadie dan ayahnya justru menemukan lelaki tersebut tergantung tewas di kloset kamar kerja ibunya. Setelahnya, peristiwa-peristiwa aneh pun terjadi. Si cilik Sawyer mulai dihantui sesosok monster seram dari balik kloset kamarnya.

Melihat alur plotnya, setidaknya terdapat beberapa film yang memiliki kemiripan, sebut saja Darkness Falls, Lights Out, The Babadook, hingga film animasi Monster Inc.. Rasa kehilangan (lost) yang menjadi poin filmnya sebenarnya bisa menjadi pijakan kuat untuk landasan kisahnya, namun sayangnya naskahnya tak mampu mengemas eksposisi sang antagonis dengan baik. Siapa sebenarnya, dan dari mana asal The Boogeyman? Apakah monster tersebut adalah entitas supernatural, alien, monster mutasi, atau semata hanya metafora? Aturan main sang monster yang menjadi pengembangan trik horornya pun tak digali dengan jelas. Ia takut cahaya, mengapa? Apakah ia bisa bergerak tanpa batasan ruang, jika iya, mengapa harus membuka pintu? Semua film horor pasti memiliki motif dan alasan jelas, mengapa dan bagaimana sang antagonis bekerja. Tanpa ini, ancaman tidak bisa kita rasakan selain hanya beberapa momen jump scare yang mengagetkan.

The Boogeyman adalah tipikal film horor monster kebanyakan yang merupakan persilangan beberapa film horor superior sebelumnya. Film ini tak ubahnya sosok alien yang meneror mangsanya. Jika mau bicara trauma dan kehilangan (baca: metafora), The Babadok adalah contoh paling sempurna dan naskahnya tahu persis bagaimana menggunakan sang monster untuk mengirimkan pesannya. Contoh bagus lainnya adalah film horor The Closet yang diproduksi Korea Selatan. The Boogeyman adalah film yang tanggung dari sisi penceritaan dan pesannya, sekalipun sisi teknisnya terbilang mapan. Untuk penikmat genrenya, mungkin ada baiknya menanti filmnya tersaji di platform streaming. Tak ada yang istimewa, kecuali penampilan para bintang mudanya, khususnya si kecil Vivien Lyra Blair yamg mencuri perhatian dalam nyaris semua adegannya.
