DreamWorks Animation mencoba untuk membuat animasi nonfranchise baru, melalui The Boss Baby arahan Tom McGrath. Film ini diadaptasi dari buku ilustrasi berjudul sama, karya Marla Frazee. Film ini diisi suara oleh pemain-pemain top, macam Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow, dan Tobey McGuire.

Tim adalah seorang bocah yang bahagia, tinggal bersama ayah dan ibu yang amat menyayanginya. Semuanya berubah ketika seorang bayi yang entah dari mana datang ke rumahnya, dan dikenalkan kedua orang tuanya sebagai adik Tim. Kelakuan sang adik yang aneh, berbicara dan berpolah layaknya orang tua, membuat tim semakin penasaran. Sang adik mengenalkan dirinya sebagai The Boss Baby, seorang agen bayi, yang menyelidiki mengapa manusia kini lebih memilih memelihara anjing ketimbang bayi.

Absurd. Kesan yang didapat setelah menonton pembuka filmnya. Darimana datangnya para bayi? Mirip film animasi Stork, menggambarkan sebuah “pabrik bayi”, yang memiliki manajemen profesional dengan segala aturannya. Kisahnya secara keseluruhan jelas sulit untuk diikuti penonton anak-anak, yang menjadi sasarannya. Kisah filmnya jelas memiliki pesan kuat terhadap orang dewasa, yang kini lebih memilih anjing peliharaan ketimbang bayi, yang digambarkan lebih ribet mengurusnya. Pesan lain yang lebih menyentuh, adalah hubungan kakak dan adik pada usia balita dan kanak-kanak. Kakak akan selalu cemburu pada sang adik, yang selalu mendapat perhatian lebih dari orang tua. Pesannya memang menarik, namun berjalan sendiri-sendiri dan tidak terjalin dalam satu kesatuan motif cerita yang berkesinambungan. Naskahnya seharusnya lebih tegas memilih antara Isu anjing peliharaan atau hubungan kakak-adik.

Satu kelebihan film ini jelas pada unsur komedinya. Walau kadang memaksa, namun banyolannya sungguh mampu mengocok perut penonton melalui polah sang bayi. Chemistry antara kakak dan sang bayi sangat terjalin dengan kuat dari awal hingga akhir. Beberapa momen menyentuh dengan iringan lagu Blackbird (The Beatles) sangat mengena dalam beberapa adegannya. Satu lagi yang menarik adalah segmen fantasinya, yang mengingatkan bagaimana sewaktu kecil, kita bisa berimajinasi begitu liar dari segala hal di sekitar kita.

The Boss Baby menawarkan sebuah komedi yang sangat menghibur dengan pesan keluarga yang dalam namun terjebak dalam narasi yang absurd untuk target penontonnya. Film ini dijamin bakal memicu puluhan pertanyaan bagi anak-anak yang menontonnya. Jelas terlalu jauh imajinasi film ini untuk mereka. Dalam satu momen, film ini sebenarnya punya potensi untuk bisa satu level dengan film-film garapan Pixar macam Up dan Inside Out, namun The Boss Baby ternyata memilih bermain aman. Ah andai saja semuanya hanya fantasi Tim, betapa indah dan dalam makna filmnya.
