Setelah sukses dua seri Divergent sebelumnya, kini buku novel ketiganya diadaptasi menjadi dua bagian mengikuti tren final chapter masa kini yang jelas semata hanya untuk tujuan pasar. Walau tak sesukses film fiksi ilmiah remaja sejenis yakni, The Hunger Games namun Divergent memiliki fansnya sendiri. Dua kisah sebelumnya menawarkan premis cerita yang lumayan menarik dengan pesan moral yang tak sulit ditangkap penonton. Sementaranya seri ketiganya ini menawarkan kisah yang sama sekali berbeda dengan sebelumnya.

Setelah kejadian seri sebelumnya tak ada lagi faksi, semua bebas dan lepas dari aturan, namun mereka tetap dilarang untuk keluar dari wilayah tembok. Rezim baru yang dipimpin Evelyn mengambil tindakan tegas dengan mengeksekusi mati semua orang yang menjadi kaki tangan rezim terdahulu. Tris dan Four yang tidak menyukai situasi ini memutuskan untuk keluar dari tembok seperti apa yang dimaui oleh leluhur mereka. Bersama beberapa rekan mereka, Tris dan Four akhirnya keluar dan mendapatkan sebuah dunia baru yang sama sekali berbeda dari apa yang mereka pikir.

Tidak masuk akal. Ini kesan pertama ketika kisah demi kisah berjalan berujung pada sesuatu yang absurd dan serba membingungkan. Film ini seperti lepas sama sekali dari dua film sebelumnya. Semuanya yang jelas menjadi serba tidak jelas dan pertanyaan besar mengapa orang-orang diluar tembok bersusah payah melakukan ini semua. Sungguh tak masuk akal. Dengan teknologi yang demikian tinggi mestinya mereka mampu memperbaiki kehidupan manusia menjadi lebih baik. Premis menarik dua seri sebelumnya sirna dan berganti menjadi tema standar fiksi ilmiah kebanyakan dimana sekelompok manusia mencoba mengubah peradaban manusia melalui pengorbanan manusia yang lain dan kaum superior harus diutamakan. Tak asing bukan?

The Divergent Series: Allegiant sama sekali tidak menyisakan sambungan plot dari dua seri sebelumnya dan kini kisahnya berubah menjadi absurd meskipun pencapaian visualnya amat memukau dan realistik. Alam mimpi/halusinasi yang menjadi unsur menarik dalam dua seri sebelumnya kini sama sekali tidak dihardirkan. Adegan aksi sama sekali tidak ada yang menonjol dan lebih dari separuh cerita adalah drama yang berjalan amat membosankan. Kisahnya mestinya sudah cukup berakhir di seri kedua, sekuel berikut yang menjadi film penutup sepertinya tak ada lagi yang menarik untuk ditawarkan selain bagi penonton remaja yang mungkin masih menyukai kisah roman standar antara Tris dan Four.
