The Fall Guy adalah film aksi komedi garapan sineas spesialis laga, David Leitch. Kita telah mengenal sang sineas melalui film-film aksi populernya, sebut saja John Wick, Atomic Blonde, hingga Deadpool 2. Film ini diadaptasi lepas dari seri televisi bertitel sama yang disiarkan pada era 1980-an. Film ini dibintangi beberapa pemain papan atas, Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Winston Duke, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, hingga Stephanie Hsu. Dengan bujet USD 125 juta dan bermodal nama besar para kastingnya, apakah The Fall Guy mampu memberikan sajian yang segar?

Colt Seavers (Gosling) adalah seorang mantan stuntman top yang mengakhiri karirnya akibat mengalami kecelakaan saat produksi. Suatu ketika, seorang produser meminta Colt untuk membantu produksi film yang rupanya diarahkan oleh mantan pacarnya, Jody (Blunt). Colt pun sontak menerima dan terbang ke lokasi produksi di Australia. Colt pun disambut dingin oleh Jody, walau hatinya sebenarnya berbunga-bunga. Di sela-sela produksi, Colt mendapat misi dari sang produser untuk meminta sang bintang Tom Ryder (Johnson) untuk kembali ke lokasi syuting. Sang bintang rupanya menghilang. Siapa sangka, pencarian Colt justru menyeretnya ke sebuah intrik pelik yang melibatkan satu kelompok gangster.

Tidak banyak film yang berkisah tentang karakter pemeran pengganti (stuntman) dan The Fall Guy adalah satu hal yang amat menyegarkan. Plotnya memperlihatkan aksi dibelakang layar, bagaimana seorang stuntman bekerja yang ini memang menjadi spesialis sutradara pembuatnya (dulu juga seorang stuntman dan coordinator). Sungguh menyenangkan melihat proses produksi film dan stuntman bekerja dalam beberapa pengadeganannya. “Roh” seri televisinya pun masih terasa dan bukan semata berkisah tentang pekerjaan stuntman, namun adalah bagaimana sang protagonis (serinya diperankan oleh Lee Majors dan Douglas Barr) dengan kemampuan fisik dan keahliannya beraksi sebagai pemburu bayaran. Filmnya juga banyak mengambil tribute dari film dan seri televisi lainnya, melalui dialog, efek suara, hingga score.

Sesungguhnya tak ada masalah dengan cerita, hanya saja tone komedi yang berlebihan, sering kali menjauhkan cerita dengan penonton. Mungkin ini bukan masalah bagi penonton lain. Namun, sisi komedinya yang memang menghibur, seringkali menghilangkan ancaman dan intensitas ketegangan yang dibangun. Aksi-aksinya memang menghebohkan, namun sang protagonis seolah memiliki pelindung khusus (plot armor) yang membuatnya selalu baik-baik saja. Sisi roman juga mendominasi plotnya yang kadang ini disajikan sedikit berlebihan. Ini juga melemahkan chemistry Colt dan Jody, yang sesungguhnya terjalin kuat karena sosok dua pemain bintangnya. Ringkasnya, alut plotnya mudah diantisipasi dan minimnya ancaman, kadang membuat lelah mengikuti kisahnya.

The Fall Guy menyajikan eksplorasi segar di genrenya plus aksi-aksi stunt heboh, namun kemasan estetik dan sisi komedi yang berlebihan membuat kisahnya seringkali terasa lepas (kurang fokus). Bagi penonton yang mencari hiburan ringan dengan bintang-bintang kelas atas di dalamnya, The Fall Guy bakal menjadi tontonan yang sangat memuaskan. Talenta sang sineas dalam mengolah adegan aksi jelas sudah tidak kita ragukan lagi. Secara personal, saya lebih memilih film aksi garapan sineas, macam John Wick dan Atomic Blonde sebagai tontonan yang lebih serius. Bukankah Deadpool 2 juga adalah komedi dan sang protagonis bahkan sulit dibunuh? Iya benar, hanya saja nature sang protagonis dan genrenya berbeda jauh dengan The Fall Guy.
