Film bergenre found footage kini memang tengah panas-panasnya. Sejak film fenomenal The Blair Wicth Project (1999) (baca review: https://montasefilm.com/the-blair-witch-project/) tercatat hanya sedikit film-film genre ini yang sukses kritik dan komersil, diantaranya Paranaromal Activity, REC, Cloverfield, hingga Chronicle. Silang genre mulai bervariasi namun horor masih mendominasi genre baru ini. The Gallows mencoba meramaikan pasar dengan menawarkan satu ide cerita yang unik.

Trauma pada pertunjukan teater sekolah “The Gallows”, 20 tahun rupanya lalu belum lepas dari ingatan banyak orang. Pertunjukan tersebut menelan korban seorang siswa yang secara tidak wajar benar-benar tergantung hingga tewas. Kisah filmnya mengikuti tiga orang siswa-siswi yang ingin menggangu acara tersebut dengan merusak set teater di malam harinya. Tanpa mereka sadari mereka terjebak dalam gedung bersama dengan “penunggu” teater tersebut. Selanjutnya permainan kucing-kucingan antara para korban dan pemangsa sudah menjadi tontonan standar genre ini. Ide cerita sebenarnya unik namun lubang cerita serta motif yang lemah banyak mengisi plotnya, plus ending pun tak jelas. Namun sepertinya absurdnya cerita bukan masalah bagi fans genre horor sejenis.

Secara teknis standar genre ini, The Gallows tidak ada satu terobosan apapun. Tidak ada sesuatu yang belum pernah kita lihat sebelumnya, kecuali beberapa segmen adegan di panggung pertunjukan yang membuat kita cukup bergidik. Kamera seringkali bergerak tidak karuan dan cukup membuat kepala pening namun jalan cerita masih tertata jelas dengan beberapa teknik potong silang adegan (cross cutting) juga digunakan dengan efektif. Efek kejutan memang yang diharapkan dari teknik kamera subyektif seperti ini dan beberapa shot cukup efektif membuat seisi bioskop menjerit.

Dengan berbekal bujet hanya $100.000, The Gallows menampilkan ide cerita yang lumayan unik dan rasanya sukses untuk target penontonnya (remaja) namun tidak ada terobosan baru untuk genre sejenis. Ke depan horor berbujet murah seperti ini masih bakal sering muncul namun harapan akan ide dan cerita yang lebih berkualitas masih belum pupus dari para penikmat film. Dua bulan ke depan sutradara kenamaan M. Night Shyamalan akan mencoba peruntungan dengan genre found footage melalui film barunya, The Visit.
