Michael Bryce, a protection agent, is tasked with protecting Darius Kincaid, one of the world's most famous assassins.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard adalah film aksi komedi yang disutradarai oleh Patrick Hughes. Sang sineas kita kenal sebelumnya melalui film aksi garapannya, The Expendables 3, yang memang memiliki sisi komedi yang kuat. Bermain dalam film ini adalah aktor-aktris papan atas, macam Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman, hingga Salma Hayek. Kisahnya sederhana saja, Michael Bryce (Reynolds), seorang mantan agen pelindung saksi, suatu ketika harus melindungi saksi penting yang juga musuh bebuyutannya, seorang pembunuh bayaran kelas kakap, Darius Kincaid (Jackson). Kincaid memiliki bukti terhadap aksi kejahatan perang yang dilakukan seorang diktator, Vladislav Dukhovich (Oldman). Dukhovic mengerahkan seluruh anak buahnya untuk membunuh Kincaid sebelum ia bisa bersaksi di pengadilan. Anda tahu sendiri bukan, apa yang terjadi selanjutnya?

Kisahnya yang cepat dan tanpa henti sejak babak kedua memang bakal memuaskan para fans genrenya. Aksi baku tembak, perkelahian, kejar-mengejar, hingga ledakan nyaris ada dalam setiap adegannya. Satu hal yang membuat film ini menjadi menarik adalah jelas chemistry antara Michael dan Darius, yang nyaris berceloteh tanpa henti sepanjang filmnya. Di luar plotnya yang sudah umum, sisi komedi memang yang membuat kita bakal tak bosan dengan dua tokohnya, dan Sam Jackson adalah bintangnya. Rasanya tak pernah tokoh yang diperankan Jackson sangat menyenangkan untuk dilihat sejak Pulp Fiction beberapa dekade silam. Jackson mampu tampil konyol maupun karismatik sekaligus. Ini jelas bukan akting terbaiknya, namun adalah salah satu perannya yang sangat menghibur. Jackson rupanya masih memiliki mojo-nya di usianya yang ke-68!

Sang sineas juga amat terampil mengemas adegan aksi yang terasa realistik karena minim penggunaan CGI. Aksi kejar-mengejar seru di kota Amsterdam yang khas, boleh jadi adalah salah satu yang terbaik dalam satu dekade terakhir ini.  Di tengah hingar-bingar aksinya, sang sineas kerap menyisipkan segmen kilas-balik dua tokohnya yang tone-nya sangat kontras dengan adegan aksi sepanjang filmnya. Dalam satu momen perkelahian di bar, adegan yang begitu keras dan brutal mampu disajikan begitu ringan, elegan, dan romantis. Sentuhan musik “oldies” nyaris sepanjang filmnya juga membuat nuansa filmnya menjadi berbeda.

Boleh jadi, The Hitman’s Bodyguard memliliki kisah yang bakal terlupakan dengan bumbu aksi serta humor yang amat menghibur, namun penampilan Sam Jackson yang gemilang tak akan mudah dilupakan. Walau pasti banyak menggunakan stunt, namun penampilan Jackson dalam aksi-aksinya memang di luar dugaan, dan yang mengherankan ia sama sekali tidak tampak tua dalam film ini. Dengan ratusan sumpah serapah dalam dialog serta aksi-aksi brutalnya, film ini memang bukan untuk tontonan semua kalangan. Namun, buat fans genrenya, film menghibur ini jelas tidak boleh dilewatkan.
