The Holdovers adalah film drama komedi arahan sineas kawakan, Alexander Payne yang juga menulis naskahnya. Payne sebelumnya telah memproduksi film-film drama berkualitas kaliber Oscar, antara lain Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants, serta Nebraska. Paul Hunham (Giamatti) adalah seorang profesor sejarah kuno di Akademi Barton, sekolah asrama ternama di wilayah New England, AS, berlatar tahun 1970. Pada liburan natal, Paul didapuk menjadi supervisor bagi murid-murid yang tidak bisa liburan dan tetap tinggal di asrama. Di sana, akhirnya hanya menyisakan satu muridnya yang keras, Angus Tully (Sessa) dan kepala kafetaria, Mary (Randolph) yang baru saja kehilangan putranya di Perang Vietnam. Ketiga sosok berbeda karakter ini menyatu dalam satu momen yang mengkontemplasi kehidupan mereka yang kesepian.

Latar waktu dan setting unik, ditambah plotnya yang insidental menjadikan The Holdovers sebagai sebuah drama segar dalam beberapa tahun terakhir ini. Relasi ketiga tokohnya menjadi kekuatan terbesar cerita yang membentuk sebuah ikatan psikologis yang “hangat”. Selain naskah, tiga bintang utamanya adalah kekuatan terbesar film ini. Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, dan Dominic Sessa bermain luar biasa. Sang sineas memang kita kenal sebelumnya, mampu memaksimalkan potensi para pemainnya untuk bermain impresif. Giamatti yang juga bermain brilian sebagai si ahli anggur (wine) dalam Sideways, kembali memperlihatkan performa gemilang. Untuk urusan peran yang memiliki kepercayaan diri sekaligus canggung, Giamatti adalah jagonya. Adu mulutnya dengan Angus (Sessa) dan Mary (Randolph) adalah momen-momen terbaik film ini. Sessa pun mampu mengimbangi sang aktor melalui celotehan yang cerdas, lalu Randolph dengan ekspresinya khasnya yang membunuh, tanpa banyak harus mengucapkan dialog.

The Holdovers mengusung naskah unik yang membumi melalui sisi humor serta penampilan kuat tiga pemeran utamanya. Sang sineas kembali mampu memproduksi film berkelas, selevel Sideways, The Descendants, dan Nebraska. Memang untuk urusan cerita pria yang kesepian, Payne selalu mampu mengekslorasi kedalaman kisahnya melalui dialog humor berkelas. The Holdovers sekaligus pula bisa menjadi refleksi kehidupan, melalui perspektif remaja, pria paruh baya, serta seorang ibu yang tengah dirundung duka, dan naskahnya mampu memberi solusi yang bersahaja. Tak ada seorang pun ingin hidup dalam kesendirian, namun alam memberi kita cobaan sekaligus memberi solusi yang ideal jika kita mampu melewatinya. Walau rilis agak telat di Indonesia, The Holdovers adalah satu drama berkualitas yang patut ditonton di layar bioskop.
