After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo.

Film animasi musikal The Jungle Book (1967) diinspirasi dari buku karya Rudyard Kipling yang sukses besar dan banyak dipuji karena ilustrasi musik dan lagunya. Disney juga pernah membuat remake animasinya di tahun 1994 melalui film live action berjudul sama namun gagal secara komersil sekalipun dipuji banyak pengamat. Dua dekade kemudian dengan teknologi yang jauh lebih mapan, Disney kembali memproduksi ulang film “live action”-nya yang dikombinasi dengan rekayasa digital terkini dan hasilnya sungguh-sungguh luar biasa. Jon Favreu yang juga membesut Iron Man kembali sukses dengan film ini melalui sentuhannya.

Plotnya bisa jadi banyak orang yang sudah tahu. Mowgli, bocah cilik yang diasuh oleh sekelompok serigala, diincar oleh sosok harimau jahat, Shere Khan, karena keberadaannya dianggap bisa mengancam kelak. Dengan ditemani mentornya sang macan panther, Bagheera, Mowgly diantar ke perkampungan manusia. Perjalanan sang bocah mempertemukannya dengan Baloo, sosok beruang madu yang kelak jadi sahabatnya. Mereka bertiga mendapati sebuah petualangan yang seru dan menegangkan.

Inti kisahnya nyaris sama dengan film animasinya hanya berbelok sedikit pada ending-nya dengan tambahan kecil muatan lingkungan. Tidak ada masalah dengan sisi cerita karena memang keunggulan film ini lebih pada pencapaian visualnya. Karakter-karakter binatang mampu dihidupkan dengan begitu nyata dan halus sejak adegan pembuka. Satu contoh sempurna adalah adegan Mowgly bersama sang ular Kaa dan adegan “kolosal” di bangunan kuno milik King Louie. Sentuhan tone setting-nya sepanjang film seolah membawa kita ke alam imajinasi bernuansa mistis yang memadukan sisi cerah dan suram yang sempurna untuk kisahnya. Versi 3D-nya sepertinya adalah tontonan yang maksimal untuk film ini.

Bicara kastingnya hanya karakter Mowgly satu-satunya karakter manusia di film ini dan dimainkan begitu manis oleh Neel Sethi. Aktor-aktor senior macam Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, hingga Christopher Walken mampu dengan sangat baik mengisi suara karakter Bagheera, Baloo, dan sang bos karismatik, King Louie. Scarlett Johansson walau tak dominan mampu tampil menghipnotis sebagai Kaa. Namun adalah Idris Elba yang bermain sempurna dan meyakinkan sebagai sang antagonis, Shere Khan.

The Jungle Book adalah sebuah percobaan yang sukses untuk menghidupkan animasik klasik Disney. Pencapaian visual yang sangat memesona, beberapa nomor lagu dan musik yang manis, serta karakter-karakter kuat yang diisi aktor-aktris senior menjadikan film ini sebuah hiburan ringan yang sempurna untuk segala usia. Film ini memberikan pesan sederhana tentang bagaimana manusia dan binatang bisa hidup harmonis dengan alam. Ending-nya yang berakhir hangat dan manis membuka kisah lanjutan untuk antisipasi sekuelnya. Saya pikir tidak bakal ada satu orang pun yang keberatan dengan ini.
