The Life List adalah drama komedi romansa rilisan Netflix yang diarahkan oleh Adam Brooks. Uniknya, Brooks terakhir mengarahkan rom-com Definitely Maybe yang dibintangi Ryan Reynolds, sekitar 17 tahun yang lalu. Kisahnya sendiri diadaptasi dari novel laris berjudul sama karya Lori Nelson. Film ini dibintangi Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, dan Connie Britton, yang terhitung bukan para pemain kelas satu. Carson bahkan hanya membintangi dua film Netflix, Purple Hearts dan Carry-On belum lama lalu. Akankah film berdurasi 125 menit ini melewati kualitas tipikal film roman rilisan Netflix sebelumnya?

Setelah sang ibu (Britton) meninggal, Alex (Carson) tidak mendapat satu sen pun warisan sang ibu, selain wish list yang ia tulis pada umur 13 tahun. Sang ibu rupanya menginginkan putrinya melengkapi seluruh wish list tersebut, sebagai syarat untuk mendapat warisan. Jika tidak dipenuhi, maka warisan tersebut dibatalkan. Tiap kali ia menyelesaikan wish list-nya, ia mendapat rekaman DVD dari sang ibu. Petualangan ini membawanya lebih jauh memaknai tentang kehidupan, relasi dengan keluarganya, serta para pria dalam hidupnya.

Walau plot senada bukan hal yang baru, namun The Life List memiliki premis yang sedikit berbeda, walau masih terasa sureal. Ini memang bukan kejadian nyata yang tidak mustahil bisa terjadi. Plotnya mencampuradukkan banyak hal yang menjadi rutinitas dalam kehidupan Alex, yang merupakan konsekuensi dari “wish list” yang terpaksa ia lakukan. Plot “memaksa” ini sudah diduga hanya sebagai alat untuk mendekatkan Alex dengan cinta sejatinya. Walau terasa agak riuh, namun sub inti plot yang menekankan hubungan alex dengan sang ibu masih terjaga. Satu momen rekaman sang ibu di penghujung, dijamin membuat fans drama sejati bakal terkuras air mata.

Tipikal roman yang predictable, namun The Life List memiliki momen menyentuh antara ibu dan putrinya, yang diperankan enerjik oleh Sofia Carson. Walau bukan terhitung drama berat, namun deretan kastingnya tampil cukup apik. Walau banyak diantaranya hanya tampil sekilas, chemistry pemeran pendukung dengan sosok Alex cukup bisa kita rasakan. Contoh saja, hubungan Alex dengan ayah kandung dan tirinya yang cukup mencuri perhatian. Sang aktris terhitung brilian untuk membagi energi aktingnya ke banyak sosok di sekelilingnya dengan baik.

Dari sisi genrenya, The Life List bukanlah sebuah drama romansa berkelas, namun film ini bakal dirasakan secara emosional bagi penonton yang dekat dengan sosok ibu. Film kadang semata bukan soal pencapaian estetik, namun bagaimana mental kita merespon kisahnya, dan film ini bagi saya terasa sangat personal. The Life List adalah sebuah tontonan yang pas dengan momen liburan kali ini. Tanpa perlu menyalahkan segala kekacauan yang terjadi sekarang, kita bisa memulainya dari memaafkan diri dan berdamai dengan kita sendiri terlebih dulun. Selamat berlebaran.
