An elite hitman teaches his trade to an apprentice who has a connection to one of his previous victims.

Arthur Bishop (Statham) adalah seorang pembunuh bayaran profesional yang biasanya menerima order dari Harry (Sutherland). Harry memiliki seorang putra, Steve (Foster) yang ia harapkan mampu bekerja bersama Arthur kelak. Setelah Harry tewas, Arthur terpaksa melatih Steve untuk menjadi partnernya. Misi demi misi berlalu, belakangan Steve mengetahui jika ternyata Arthur sendiri yang telah membunuh ayahnya.

Film ini merupakan remake film berjudul sama, The Mechanic (1972) yang dibintangi oleh aktor laga, Charles Bronson. Tidak seperti film-film aksi Statham lazimnya, film ini bertutur dengan tempo sedang dan sedikit sabar tidak mengumbar adegan aksi. Tak ada yang istimewa dengan kisahnya, tanpa melihat film aslinya pun, film ini terlalu mudah diantisipasi. Inti konfliknya hanyalah standar plot balas dendam, perseteruan sang guru versus murid.

West yang kita kenal dengan film-film sarat aksi macam Con Air dan The Tomb Rider, dan kali ini ia mencoba tampil beda dengan menggarap film aksi kelas B berbujet kecil. West mengakali secara elegan melalui pencapaian sinematografi yang matang, gambar berefek “grain” dengan dominan shot-shot dekat. Adegan aksinya sendiri juga cenderung brutal dan realistik, nyaris semua adegan aksi menampilkan shot pistol yang ditembakkan ke arah kepala secara langsung dengan darah dimana-mana. Too violent.. dan tidak enak dipandang. Statham adalah sosok yang menjadi kunci film ini. Tidak seperti film-film Statham sebelumnya, West tidak banyak mengeksploitasi kemampuan fisik sang aktor namun lebih menggali sisi emosi dan pesona Statham. Bisa jadi ini adalah film terbaik sang bintang yang pernah ia lakoni.

The Mechanic hanyalah film berbiaya murah yang mencoba menawarkan aksi kekerasan brutal dan pesona Statham yang dikemas secara elegan. Penonton yang terbiasa dengan film-film aksi seru yang dibintangi Statham (Seri Transpoter, Death Race, seri Crank) boleh jadi kecewa karena tak banyak aksi seru yang ditawarkan. Bagi penonton yang ingin melihat penampilan yang berbeda dari Statham tak ada salahnya menonton film ini. Statham sepertinya mencoba beralih dari sosok bintang laga yang mengandalkan kemampuan fisik menjadi sosok yang lebih berkarisma, dan ia memang memiliki potensi untuk itu.
