Siapa yang tak kenal si kera sakti yang sudah sering kali diadaptasi ke film dan seri televisi? Kini satu lagi versinya dirilis. The Monkey King adalah film animasi arahan Anthony Stacchi yang juga pernah menggarap Open Season (2006) dan The Box Trolls (2014). Film rilisan Netflix ini diisi suara oleh komedian Jimmy O. Yang, Jolie Huang, Bowen Yang, Stephanie Tsu, dan BD Wong. Film berdurasi 96 menit ini diadaptasi lepas dari cerita legendaris tiongkok, Journey to the West. Mampukan film ini membawa tren positif film-film animasi produksi Netflix seperti sebelumnya?

Seekor kera ajaib (Yang) lahir dari sebuah batu di puncak bukit yang menganggu kenyamanan raja kayangan. Ketika sang raja akan menyingkirkannya, Buddha berkata jika kera tersebut kelak memiliki sebuah takdir besar. Sang kera cilik liar pun mencoba untuk membaur dengan kelompoknya, namun justru membawa petaka. Tergoda untuk menjadi dewa dan kehidupan abadi, ia pun berlatih keras untuk membasmi 100 siluman untuk menarik perhatian dunia kayangan. Ia bahkan mencuri tongkat sakti milik raja naga air (Bowen Yang) untuk memuluskan niatnya. Dalam petualangannya, ia juga bertemu dengan seorang gadis cilik desa bernama Lin (Huang). Siapa sangka, sang kera membawa keonaran di dunia manusia dan dewa hingga akhirnya sang Buddha pun turun tangan.

Kisah klasik sang raja kera ini disajikan melalui animasi penuh warna dengan gaya oriental yang kental. Visualisasi setting tiap segmen pun disajikan mengesankan melalui alam ranah dewa yang unik, seperti dunia neraka dan alam kayangan bernuansa awan. Demikian pula para karakternya, contoh saja sosok raja naga yang disajikan dengan detil indah dan memesona. Di luar sisi visual yang mengagumkan, unsur humor turut pun mendominasi, khususnya sosok protagonis utama yang sedetik pun tak bisa diam dengan ragam celotehannya. Gaya dialog komedi khas barat dalam beberapa momen kadang terasa kurang pas dengan tone kisahnya. Namun, ini tentu masalah selera.

Dengan kisah oriental klasik dan visual unik dan penuh warna, The Monkey King memberi penyegaran bagi film-film animasi populer lainnya, walau tidak untuk substansi ceritanya. Kisahnya memang tidaklah buruk, namun rasanya kurang memiliki pesan kuat yang universal jika ingin bersaing dalam festival selevel Oscar. Bentuk kompromi sentuhan barat sedikit mengurangi sisi filosofi cerita yang sebenarnya memiliki nilai luhur tentang keseimbangan alam semesta. Setidaknya untuk tontonan keluarga The Monkey King adalah satu tontonan yang menghibur.
