The Old Guard 2 adalah sekuel dari film aksi-fantasi The Old Guard (2020) yang kini disutradarai oleh Victoria Mahoney. Kisahnya masih diadaptasi dari komik The Old Guard karya Greg Rucka yang juga menjadi salah satu penulis naskahnya. Filmnya masih dibintangi oleh Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, dan Chiwetel Ejiofor. Dua bintang besar masuk dalam deretan kastingnya, yakni Uma Thurman, Henry Golding, serta Veronica Ngô. Apa lagi yang kini ditawarkan sekuel rilisan Netflix ini?

Kelompok elit yang dipimpin Andromache alias Andy masih mencoba untuk menjaga keseimbangan dunia, sekalipun Andy kini telah kehilangan keabadiannya. Dua sosok abadi kuat kini muncul, yakni Discord (Thurman) dan Quỳnh (Ngô) yang ingin membalas dendam pada Andy, sekaligus menghabisi timnya. Andy pun meminta tolong rekan abadi lamanya, Tuah (Golding), untuk menghadapi mereka. Tanpa diketahui Andy, muridnya yang juga kaum abadi, Nile (Layne) rupanya memiliki kekuatan tersembunyi yang ingin dimanfaatkan oleh Discord.

Apa yang kita harapkan dari sebuah sekuel rupanya sangat jauh dari ekspektasi. Plotnya justru kini banyak berkutat menyoal masa lalu Andy dan relasinya dengan sosok Discord dan Quỳnh. Urgensi dan ancaman tidak dapat kita rasakan kuat. Kelemahan sebelumnya juga masih terlihat melalui visualisasi ratusan tahun silam yang cenderung digarap seadanya. Kisahnya memang lebih ideal dengan kemasan kolosal untuk memberikan gambaran meyakinkan pada penonton, tetapi tentu bujet menjadi kendala. Ending kisahnya juga memberikan pertanyaan besar, mengapa filmnya diproduksi jika hanya berakhir seperti ini? What’s the point.

The Old Guard 2 adalah sebuah kisah eksposisi ketimbang sekuel, dengan tempo lambat, aksi medioker, dan resolusi menggantung yang membuat frustasi dan melelahkan sebagai tontonan. Premisnya boleh jadi menarik, namun eksekusi naskah dan opsi estetiknya sama sekali tidak meyakinkan. Semua terlihat sekali serba seadanya. Semua terlihat sekali serba seadanya. Kehadiran bintang-bintang besar tidak membekas sama sekali. Kekuatan sang bintang (Theron) boleh jadi adalah magnet terbesar yang bisa menarik penonton, tetapi saya tak yakin, kaum mortal bakal tergoda menonton film ini. Belum ada berita jika kisah lanjutan bakal diproduksi (jika film ini sukses tentunya). Menyedihkan.
