Bagaimana jika suatu hari kelak kehamilan adalah hal yang tak wajar, dan siapa pun bisa memiliki seorang bayi melalui janin artifisial. Isu ini yang diangkat The Pod Generation, sebuah drama sci-fi yang digarap oleh Sophie Barthes. Tidak tanggung-tanggung, film ini dibintangi dua nama besar, Emilia Clark dan Chiwetel Ejiofor. Film ini memulai debut rilisnya di Sundance Film Festival awal tahun ini dan kini telah dirilis melalui platform Prime Video. Akankah tema provokatif dan dua bintang besarnya mampu memberi warna baru bagi genrenya?

Rachel (Clarke) dan Alvy (Ejiofor) adalah pasangan muda yang berkarir dan tinggal di Kota New York berlatar masa depan. Suatu ketika, kantor tempat Rachel bekerja menawarkan satu paket tunjangan kehamilan, di mana seorang bayi dibesarkan dalam sebuah janin artifisial (berbentuk seperti telur) hingga lahir kelak. Awalnya, Alvy tidak menyetujui karena hal ini bertentangan dengan alam, namun Rachel yang amat menginginkannya membuatnya tak kuasa menolak. Mereka pun akhirnya memiliki bayi dalam pod, dan ini membawa perubahan amat besar bagi kehidupan keduanya.

Kisahnya ringkas dan tegas, mengusung tema evolusi teknologi, dalam hal ini adalah soal kehamilan. Sulit untuk berkomentar terhadap plotnya yang amat absurd. Isu provokatif semacam ini bukan perkara mudah untuk diangkat. Poin besarnya adalah ke mana sebenarnya arah kisah dan pesannya? Lazimnya isu macam ini berujung pada dilema moral, namun faktanya, plotnya tidak mengarah ke sana. Teknologi ini dideskripsikan seabgai “solusi ultra” bagi perempuan yang menginginkan anak tanpa harus bersusah payah hamil berbulan-bulan dengan segala “penderitaan”-nya. Jika kehamilan artifisial dimaksudkan sebagai sesuatu yang tidak alamiah, lalu mengapa kisahnya tidak memberikan solusi ke arah ini? Apa maksud semua mimpi dan fantasi yang dialami Rachel?

The Pod Generation mencoba mengeksplorasi tema provokatif tanpa sesuatu yang berarti untuk kisah maupun pesannya. Apa sebenarnya yang ingin dicapai naskahnya? Dua bintang besarnya yang bermain apik menjadi terasa mubazir, demikian pula segala pencapaian estetiknya. Perubahan sikap Alvy dalam menyikapi situasi ini sungguh satu hal yang tak terduga dan tak konsisten dengan segala hal “alamiah” yang begitu diagungkannya. Jika memang teknologi sudah tidak lagi terbendung dengan segala inovasinya, lalu mengapa orang seperti Alvy masih eksis? Ini jelas tak masuk akal. The Pod Generation dengan segala percobaan eksplorasi tema dan capaian estetiknya adalah satu hal terburuk yang dicapai medium film, khususnya genrenya.
