The Quake merupakan film bencana produksi Norwegia yang juga sekuel dari The Wave (2015), arahan John Andreas Andersen. Sekalipun berbeda sutradara, film ini kembali menghadirkan para pemain lamanya, yakni Kristoffer Jonner, Ane Dahl Thorp, Edith Haagenrud-Sande, serta Jonas Hoff Oftebro. Setelah gelombang tsunami melanda satu kota kecil di Norwegia, kali ini gempa bumi besar melanda ibukota Norwegia, Oslo, seperti  pernah terjadi pada tahun 1904.

Tiga tahun pasca kejadian tsunami di tempat wisata Geiranger, sang ahli geologi, Kristian ternyata belum bisa melepas traumanya. Padahal sebulan pasca bencana tersebut ia dinobatkan sebagai pahlawan karena mampu menyelamatkan ratusan orang. Sang istri, Idun, yang tak tahan dengan perangai sang suami, akhirnya pindah dan bekerja di Oslo bersama kedua anaknya, Sondre dan Julia. Suatu ketika, rekan kerjanya yang juga ahli geologi, tewas secara tak wajar di satu terowongan beberapa kilometer dari Oslo. Ia rupanya sempat mengirim Kristian sejumlah data-data yang memprediksi jika satu gempa besar bisa melanda wilayah Oslo. Kristian pun, mau tak mau pergi ke Oslo dan bertemu dengan keluarganya.

Seperti halnya The Wave, lagi-lagi, formula standar plot genre bencana digunakan, dan memang sedikit terasa repetitif. Satu hal yang menarik dalam plotnya kali ini adalah sisi investigasinya yang dieksplorasi secara sabar dan tidak tergesa. Seperti sudah kita duga, teori Kristian dan sang rekan yang telah tewas diremehkan pihak otoritas. Arah plot memang mudah sekali diprediksi, namun bukan lantas membuat filmnya tak menarik. Perpaduan unsur investigasi dan sisi drama yang nyaris imbang, membuatnya berbeda dengan film-film sejenis di genrenya. Bencana memang tak terelakkan dan alur kisah berubah menjadi aksi bertahan hidup yang didominasi aksi.

Jika melihat trailer-nya saja, sudah sulit untuk dibedakan dengan film-film mapan Hollywood. Pencapaian CGI-nya sungguh sangat mengesankan dan natural, serta tidak dilebih-lebihkan seperti film-film populer di genrenya. Seperti bencana aslinya, gempa bumi hanya dihadirkan sesaat saja yang meluluhlantakkan Kota Oslo, namun pascabencana adalah yang menjadi inti plotnya. Aksi-aksi menegangkan sang ayah di dalam bangunan gedung bertingkat disajikan sangat nyata dan beberapa momen di segmen klimaks pun mampu membuat penonton menahan napas. Acungan jempol untuk satu aksi yang melibatkan Kristian dan Idun dalam adegan di lubang elevator, satu hal yang tak bakal mungkin dilakukan film-film Hollywood.

The Quake kembali membuktikan bahwa film produksi Eropa kini mampu bersaing dengan film Hollywood dari sisi mana pun, termasuk pencapaian CGI-nya. Jika dibandingkan The Wave, panorama pegunungan skandinavia yang kelewat indah memang tak lagi dominan, namun sisi ketegangan yang disajikan jelas jauh berbeda. Seperti lazimnya genre ini, tema keluarga masih menjadi selipan untuk mengirimkan pesan filmnya. Elemen bencana rupanya masih efektif menjadi medium untuk menyelesaikan problem rumah tangga. Sekuel film ini, bukan mustahil untuk diproduksi. Film bencana yang lebih mengedepankan sisi misteri dan ketegangan dengan pesan yang lebih kuat masih kita tunggu.
