The Royal Hotel adalah film drama thriller produksi Australia arahan Kitty Green. Film ini dibintangi beberapa nama tenar, yakni Julia Garner, Jessica Henwick, Hugo Weaving, serta Ursula Yovich. Sebelumnya, Green dan Garner juga berkolaborasi dalam film The Assistant (2019) yang banyak dipuji para pengamat. Kisah film ini diinspirasi dari film dokumenter Hotel Coolgardie karya Pete Gleeson. Lalu bagaimana pencapaian film ber-setting di padang gurun Australia ini?

Hanna (Garner) dan Liv (Henwick) adalah dua backpacker asal AS yang melancong ke negeri kangguru. Akibat kehabisan amunisi, mereka akhirnya terpaksa mencari pekerjaan yang mengharuskan mereka untuk bekerja di sebuah bar di tengah padang gurun terpencil dekat dengan tambang. Keseharian mereka diisi dengan melayani para pekerja tambang yang dahaga dengan hiburan serta tubuh perempuan.

Dari premisnya sudah terlihat alur plot yang sangat tak nyaman untuk ditonton. Walau nyaris tak ada adegan vulgar, namun kita bisa merasakan betul bagaimana kedua gadis protagonis berparas menarik ini melawan lingkungan yang amat ekstrem. Nyaris tak ada momen yang membuat penonton merasa nyaman sepanjang film. Ancaman seolah bisa datang dari mana saja dan kapan pun, tidak hanya nafsu para lelaki, namun alam liar, serta yang terburuk adalah persahabatan mereka. Sisi psikologis kedua gadis muda ini di bawah tekanan hebat sedemikian rupa menjadi kekuatan terbesar filmnya. Setting bar seolah menjadi panggung teatrikal dalam menyajikan sisi ancaman yang nyata, tanpa henti.

Semua ini mampu disajikan amat memukau oleh para kastingnya, khususnya Garner sebagai Hanna yang tampil garang dan dingin, lalu Henwick sebagai Liz yang tampak tenang, namun rapuh. Lalu ada pula sang bos, Billy (Weaving) yang selalu mabuk, hingga beberapa kasting pria (pelanggan bar), seperti Matty (Toby Wallace), Teeth (James Frecheville) serta yang mencuri perhatian, Dolly (Daniel Henshall). Sosok ini seolah mampu melumat tubuh Hanna dan Liv hanya dengan ekspresi wajahnya yang bak psikopat.

Dengan sisi thriller dan segala ketidaknyamanan kisahnya, The Royal Hotel menyajikan kekuatan kasting, setting, serta pesannya untuk generasi kini. Tak dipungkiri, siapa pun pasti bertanya, mengapa keduanya mau bekerja di tempat bak neraka semacam itu? Jika dijawab dengan logika, jelas tak akan masuk. Rasanya ini metafora dari generasi muda yang mencari solusi instan dari masalah hidup mereka melalui tantangan yang ekstrem (walau tak dijelaskan detil). Para pelanggan bar bak monster dan vampir yang siap menerkam mereka kapan saja. Well, Hanna dan Liz mendapatkan dengan cara yang edan, dan apa mereka lantas mendapat pelajaran dari sini? Tonton saja filmnya. Green sang sineas, Garner dan Henwick, patut mendapat apresiasi tinggi atas karyanya ini.
