Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi are warped to the magical Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario must team up with Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong to save Luigi from the evil Bowser.

Siapa yang tidak pernah bermain gim Mario Bros atau Donkey Kong? Di era 1980-an dan 1990-an, keduanya adalah gim yang amat populer rilisan Nintendo. Bahkan film live-action-nya juga pernah diproduksi tahun 1993 walau flop. The Super Mario Bros. Movie adalah film animasi 3D yang diproduseri Chris Meladandri yang sukses dengan seri Despicable Me dan Minions. Film ini diarahkan oleh duo sineas  Aaron Horvath dan Michael Jelenic, serta diisi suara oleh bintang-bintang ternama, antara lain Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Charlie Day, hingga Keegan Michael Key. Tren gim rupanya tengah melanda, setelah Dungeons and Dragons dan Tetris. Lantas bagaimana adaptasi gimnya yang sederhana dikembangkan sebagai sebuah kisah fiksi?

Mario (Pratt) dan adiknya, Luigi (Day), adalah pasangan tukang pipa yang gagal, selalu diremehkan keluarganya dan warga kota Brooklyn. Suatu momen, ketika memperbaiki jaringan pipa kota, Mario justru tersedot ke dunia fantasi kerajaan mushroom. Sementara Luigi tersedot ke dunia kegelapan (dark land) yang dipimpin Bowser (Black). Bowser berniat untuk menguasai seluruh wilayah, termasuk kerajaan mushroom dan menikahi sang ratu, Peach (Joy). Peach pun melatih Mario untuk bisa mengalahkan Bowser dan menyelamatkan Luigi. Mereka juga meminta dukungan kerajaan hutan yang dipimpin oleh raja Kong. Petualangan pun di mulai.

Tak banyak yang ditawarkan kisahnya yang minim eksposisi, baik karakter, konflik, hingga resolusinya. Eksposisi yang lemah membuat simpati kita pada tokoh-tokohnya pun menjadi lemah. Kisahnya terlalu datar dan tidak terdapat ancaman berarti dari pihak antagonis karena memang target utama film ini adalah untuk anak-anak. Momen aksi ala Mad Max yang disajikan pada separuh durasi juga tidak mampu memberi sisi hiburan yang menggigit. Alhasil, selain anak-anak, penonton dewasa akan mudah terbawa kantuk. Kekuatan film ini hanyalah visual semata yang memanjakan mata serta visualisasi aksi gimnya. Cuma itu.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, sebuah tontonan sempurna untuk target genrenya, walau rasanya tidak bakal menghibur penikmat film. Pesan yang bisa diselipkan pada kisahnya jika dibandingkan dengan Despicable Me juga terpaut jauh. Setidaknya, Minions yang mampu memberikan hiburan melalui polah konyol para karakternya. Jika saat ini kamu menginginkan hiburan lebih untuk keluarga, Dungeons and Dragons (D & D) bisa memberikan segalanya yang lebih dari Mario Bros. Jika kamu fans Mario sejati, silahkan mencoba. Saya lebih baik menonton ulang, D &D.
