Setelah Signs (2002) film-film arahan M. Nigth Shyamalan selalu dicaci pengamat namun sang sineas rupanya masih belum kapok untuk mencoba sesuatu yang baru. Horor memang genre favorit sang sineas namun kemasan found footage baru kali ini dicobanya. Melalui The Visit, Shyamalan kembali dalam performa terbaiknya dengan gaya sinematik dan plot kisahnya yang unik.

Alkisah Rebecca dan Tyler akhirnya bisa bertemu dengan kakek dan neneknya, John dan Doris, setelah sepanjang hidup mereka tak pernah bertatap muka. Sang ibu memang bermasalah dengan orang tuanya sejak ia kawin lari dengan gurunya 15 tahun silam. Rebecca menggunakan momen ini untuk mengerjakan tugas sekolahnya, merekam semua momen tentang kunjungan liburan mereka. Awalnya, semua tampak baik-baik saja namun beberapa keanehan mulai terjadi di malam harinya. Sang nenek suka berjalan di saat tidur dengan polah yang sangat aneh sementara sang kakek berperilaku aneh di siang harinya. Rebecca dan Tyler yang penasaran mencoba mengungkap misteri ini yang tanpa mereka sadari bisa mengancam jiwa mereka.

Satu ciri khas film-film Shyamalan dari aspek cerita adalah kejutan-kejutan cerita yang sulit untuk diprediksi. Kali ini sang sineas tidak hanya menampilkan kejutan luar biasa di akhir namun juga mampu menjaga irama ketegangan cerita secara perlahan namun pasti seperti yang ia lakukan dalam karya  masterpiece-nya, The Sixth Sense. Pembatasan ruang cerita yang 90% berada di lingkungan rumah besar di pinggiran desa yang sepi membuat semakin mencekam suasana. Kemasan found footage memberikan batasan cerita secara maksimal, membuat rasa penasaran penonton semakin terusik sepanjang film plus kejutan-kejutan sepanjang cerita hingga klimaks yang menghebohkan. Beberapa elemen cerita memang tak orisinil dan sering kita temui di film horor sejenis namun Shyamalan dengan gaya dan sentuhannya mampu membuatnya menjadi sesuatu yang unik dan segar.

Shyamalan memang kita kenal memiliki keunikan dari sisi sinematografi dengan sudut-sudut kamera yang khas dan aneh. Kemasan found footage memberikan keleluasaan penuh pada sang sineas untuk bereksplorasi pada aspek ini. Adegan menegangkan di areal bawah rumah ketika Tyler dan Rebecca bermain petak umpet adalah satu contoh sempurna bagaimana gaya kamera Shyamalan berpadu sempurna dengan found footage. Permainan off screen dan on screen (masuk dan ke luar frame layar) memang hal jamak dalam film horor sejenis namun Shayamalan mampu memberikan sesuatu yang baru. Kombinasi pemain cilik dan dewasa adalah satu ciri khas sang sineas. Pencapaian menawan para pemain mudanya, Olivia DeJonge dan Tyler Ed Oxenbould, yang mampu bermain amat natural sebagai Rebecca dan Tyler. Sementara Peter McRobbie sebagai kakek dan khususnya Deanna Dunagan sebagai sang nenek, mampu mengintimidasi penonton tanpa perlu sosok seram atau semacamnya.

Melalui The Visit, Shyamalan mampu memadukan secara efektif kemasan found footage dengan gaya kameranya yang khas untuk mendukung cerita yang penuh kejutan. Kombinasi pemain cilik dan tua yang bermain luar biasa menjadikan film ini adalah film terbaik sang sineas setelah Signs. Jika saja The Visit diproduksi setelah Signs mungkin karir Shyamalan bisa berjalan ke arah yang berbeda. Kita tunggu saja karya sang sineas berikutnya, Split yang rilis awal tahun depan.
