Bicara dunia ilusi dan realita bukan hal baru lagi dalam film namun Tomorrowland menawarkan sesuatu yang agak berbeda. Film fiksi Ilmiah garapan Brad Bird yang kita kenal melalui The Incredibles dan Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol menyajikan visualisasi yang menakjubkan dalam filmnya kali ini.

Alkisah manusia-manusia jenius di bumi ini menciptakan sebuah dunia paralel baru dimana mereka bisa berkreasi dan berimajinasi sebebas-bebasnya tanpa kungkungan birokrasi, hukum, serta masalah lainnya yang ada di dunia nyata. Dunia “masa depan” ini diisi oleh orang-orang terpilih yang dianggap bisa membawa umat manusia ke masa depan yang lebih baik. Frank Walker (Clooney) yang diusir dari Tomorrowland sejak kecil kini mengisolasi dirinya hingga ia bertemu dengan Casey Newton, seorang remaja putri cerdas yang juga terpilih sepertinya. Bersama gadis robot cilik cantik, Athena yang juga cinta sejati Frank di masa lalunya, mereka memulai sebuah petualangan di dua dunia yang berbeda untuk mencegah umat manusia dari kehancuran.

Sejak cerita bergulir memberi kesan jika Tomorrowland adalah sebuah film anak-anak namun dalam perkembangannya cerita berkembang menjadi semakin rumit. Target penonton (jika) untuk keluarga khususnya anak-anak jelas salah sasaran. Plot film ini cukup kompleks dan banyak terdapat dialog ilmiah yang jelas tak mudah dipahami anak-anak bahkan orang dewasa sekali pun. Penonton awam tentu bisa menikmati sajian visual yang begitu memanjakan mata pada sekuen di dunia Tomorrowland dan sekuen aksinya. Tidak lebih. Sasaran penonton menjadi pertanyaan besar untuk film ini. Buat apa sajian visual yang mengagumkan jika penonton (anak-anak) sama sekali tidak tahu apa yang sebenarnya terjadi?

Sebagai film fiksi ilmiah, Tomorrowland adalah film yang unik, sekalipun membingungkan namun cukup menghibur. Efek visual adalah nilai jual utama filmnya dan dua bintang cilik, Robertson dan Cassidy bermain sangat baik dan mampu menyita perhatian. Pesan moral filmnya jelas sekali tampak di akhir cerita dan film dengan pesan sejenis sudah cukup banyak namun Tomorrowland mengemasnya dengan gaya berbeda. Tomorrowland adalah sebuah mimpi dan harapan bagi umat manusia yang kini semakin meluntur kepedulian terhadap sesama dan lingkungan. Sebuah pesan penting yang dalam namun hilang dalam penyampaiannya.
