Netflix merilis feature-nya beberapa saat lalu melalui film sci-fi remaja, Uglies. Uglies digarap oleh sineas spesialis aksi Mc. G yang naskahnya diadaptasi dari novel sci-fi karya Scott Westerfeld. Film ini dibintangi Joey King, Keith Powers, Chase Stokes, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos, Charmie Lee, dan Laverne Cox. Mampukah film ini memberikan warna baru pada subgenrenya yang sudah melewati periode emas satu dekade silam?

Ratusan tahun ke depan setelah malapetaka melanda bumi akibat ketamakan manusia, pemerintah akhirnya menemukan solusi efektif untuk membuat semua orang menjadi awet muda rupawan serta bahagia lahir dan batin. Semua orang yang sudah berumur 16 tahun menunggu gilirannya di sebuah asrama untuk bisa tinggal di kota impian, surga bagi semua orang. Tally (King) dan Peris (Stokes) adalah dua orang sahabat lama yang sebentar lagi akan menjalani prosedur. Peris mendapat gilirannya terlebih dulu, dan Tally mendapati sohibnya berubah sikap. Melalui kawan barunya, Shay (Tju), Tally mendapati di luar sana terdapat sekelompok orang yang melawan kehendak pemerintah dan hidup bebas secara natural dengan pilihannya sendiri.

Familiar dengan plotnya? Jika kamu mengikuti menjamurnya film-film young adult sci-fi pada era awal 2010-an, kisahnya memang memiliki banyak kesamaan. Sebut saja seri populer macam, The Hunger Games,  Divergent, hingga The Maze Runner. Mengisahkan sebuah dunia utopia yang hanya dinikmati segelintir orang dan mengekang pihak yang melawan serta hidup di bawah tekanan otoritas. Motif kisahnya selalu sama dan sang protagonis akhirnya mampu membebaskan umat manusia dari kebohongan besar dan ketidakadilan. Lantas bagaimana dengan Uglies dan mengapa seri ini tidak diproduksi pada era tren Hunger Games?

Jika menilik kisahnya, dibandingkan seri-seri remaja sukses di atas, Uglies jauh lebih inferior. Ide premisnya bisa dimengerti arahnya, namun banyak hal mendasar yang masih tak terjelaskan motifnya. Setelah kaum muda diubah menjadi “boneka”, lantas apa fungsi mereka selain hanya berpesta pora dan bersenang-senang? Kamu muda nan rupawan tersebut terlihat hanya hidup glamor tanpa melakukan apa pun, selain hanya menghabiskan waktu produktif mereka. Lalu apa untungnya bagi otoritas?

Jika tujuannya untuk mengontrol pikiran, mengapa tidak dijadikan budak yang bekerja di tambang, seperti yang dilakukan Prime Sentinel dalam Transformers One, atau bagaimana kaum mesin mengambil enerji dari otak manusia dalam The Matrix. Ini satu catatan besar yang membuat premis Uglies terlihat konyol. Alur kisahnya pun sudah terbaca sejak awal. Tak ada kejutan berarti, selain hanya aksi polah para tokohnya dengan laju kisah yang mudah sekali terantisipasi dari awal hingga akhir.

Seburuk titelnya, Uglies memiliki premis konyol serta eksekusi naskah yang lemah dan mudah terbaca. Ini mungkin menjadi alasan, mengapa studio produksinya tidak mengadaptasi novelnya ketika masa jaya subgenrenya. Tak ada sesuatu yang menarik pula dari capaian estetiknya, selain aksi skateboard ala Back to the Future yang sedikit menghibur. Uglies sesungguhnya memiliki potensi premis yang cukup untuk merefleksikan masalah umat manusia terkini. Sayangnya, naskah dan eksekusinya tidak seperti yang diharapkan serta momennya pun sudah jauh terlewat.
