Black Christmas merupakan film slasher yang merupakan remake lepas dari film berjudul sama yang diproduksi tahun 1974. Tercatat film ini adalah film remake keduanya di mana pertama diproduksi tahun 2006. Film yang diproduseri produser horor kawakan, Jason Blum ini disutradarai oleh sineas independen, Sophia Takal. Sementara film berbujet USD 5 juta ini dibintangi oleh dibintangi oleh Imogen Poots, Cary Elwes, Lily Donoghue, dan Aleyse Shannon.

Alkisah menjelang liburan natal, sesosok misterius membunuh para gadis muda di lingkungan kampus tanpa sebab yang jelas. Di saat bersamaan, Riley dan rekan-rekan satu rumahnya memiliki rencana tersendiri untuk menghabiskan malam natal. Dalam perkembangannya, Riley dan rekan-rekannya diteror sosok bertopeng yang ternyata mengincar nyawa mereka. Tidak hanya berjuang untuk menyelamatkan nyawa mereka, Riley pun juga berusaha untuk mencari penyebab, mengapa mereka berusaha membunuh semua gadis di kampusnya.

Sejak awal, filmnya sudah terasa aneh dan unik. Gaya film horor slasher 1970-an (mirip-mirip seri Hallowen dan Friday the 13th) begitu dominan dalam pengadeganannya. Tak ada jump scare ala “Conjuring”. Semua serba old school dengan dominan tampilan close up dalam nyaris semua pengadeganannya. Semua tampak serba kaku dan klasik, jauh dari gaya film horor masa kini. Bisa jadi ini semua memang tribute untuk film orisinalnya. Tak ada yang salah, hanya pasti terasa aneh bagi penonton milineal.

Bicara estetika adalah murni selera sang sineas, namun sesungguhnya yang menjadi poin terbesar adalah pesannya. Film ini jelas-jelas mengusung tema “woman vs man”  yang disajikan tanpa tedeng aling-aling. Tak ada metafora atau subteks. Semuanya, baik dialog, pengadeganan, aksi, bahkan lirik musik, disajikan gamblang. Ini pun sebenarnya sudah tampak dari teks di awal filmnya. Bagi saya sendiri, semua terasa sedikit berlebihan. Lalu untuk apa, membunuh dan menguasai semua perempuan di bumi agar lantas pria menjadi penguasa dunia? Pada masa 1970-an, isu keseteraan perempuan memang begitu dominan dan penting tapi rasanya tidak lagi untuk sekarang.

Absurd dan unik, Black Christmas adalah film horor slasher dengan agenda, namun pertanyaannya apakah isu film ini masih relevan dengan situasi sekarang? Jawabnya bisa ya dan tidak, tentu sangat tergantung perspektif. Bicara estetika, film ini memang unik dan berbeda dari film sejenisnya. Dengan naratifnya yang absurd dan pesannya yang telah “usang”, film ini tidak bisa bekerja seperti yang diharapkan genrenya. Jika dikemas menggunakan komedi satir, mungkin saja bisa berbeda.
