An augmented human and Sarah Connor must stop an advanced liquid Terminator from hunting down a young girl, whose fate is critical to the human race.

Selama ini, sang kreator James Cameron rupanya gatal dengan semua sekuel setelah T2 (Terminator 2: The Judgement Day/1991) yang semuanya dianggap gagal mengikuti sukses dua seri pertamanya. Melalui Terminator: Dark Fate dengan meminjam tangan dingin sineas, Tim Miller, Cameron mengabaikan semua plot dam film sekuel setelah T2 (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machine, Terminator: Salvation, Terminator: Genisys, bahkan seri TV-nya The Sarah Connor Chronicles ). Film “remake-sekuel” langsung T2 ini, juga menandai kembalinya dua bintang lamanya, Arnold Scwarzenegger dan Linda Hamilton yang didukung beberapa nama baru, seperti Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, dan Gabriel Luna. Setelah nyaris tiga dekade, mampukah Cameron dan Miller menjawab semua ekspektasi para fans fanatiknya?

Alkisah setelah peristiwa T2, Sarah dan John berhasil mencegah kiamat serangan AI (Artifisial Intellegence) dari pihak Skynet. Rupanya ini tidak menghalangi robot dari masa depan dikirim kembali untuk memburu John. Di sisi lain, seorang cyborg perempuan bernama Graze dari masa depan, datang untuk melindungi Daniella (Dani) dari kejaran robot super (Rev-9) yang ingin membunuh sang gadis. Sejarah berulang kembali, Sarah dan Graze harus bahu membahu untuk melindungi Dani dan masa depan umat manusia.

Terasa repetitif? Ya jelas, namanya saja plot Terminator, apa yang kalian harapkan? Kucing-kucingan antara robot medioker (atau manusia terlatih) dengan robot super selalu terjadi. Satu poin menarik filmnya memang di sini dan selalu menjanjikan satu aksi petualangan yang seru. Bagi penikmat sejati film Terminator (1984) dan T2 (1991) sudah tahu betul ini. Sayangnya, semua sekuel setelahnya sangat jauh kualitasnya dari dua film sebelumnya. Formula plotnya tak lagi segar dan aksinya pun tak lagi menggigit. Dark Fate pun memiliki nasib yang sama, hanya saja sekuen aksinya memang lebih baik dari semua sekuel sebelumnya. Bagi fans lama seperti saya yang tumbuh bersama dua film orisinalnya, film ini sudah terasa menjenuhkan, namun mungkin tidak bagi generasi milineal.

Bagaimana plot Dark Fate bisa terjadi setelah peristiwa dalam T2? Rasanya spoiler jika saya menuliskannya di sini. Dibilang memaksa dan absurd, faktanya, plot aslinya pun sudah begitu tapi jika Dark Fate dikatakan “maksa banget”, saya juga tidak bisa bilang tidak. “Selalu ada ikan yang lebih besar”, ungkapan ini rasanya pas untuk menjelaskan plotnya. Tensi ketegangan dan ancaman tak lagi menggigit karena alur kisah tak sulit untuk ditebak. Oke, kita berhenti bicara plot dan logika, namun bicara soal aksi-aksinya yang memang menjadi implikasi langsung plotnya. Aksi-aksinya memang terbilang lumayan. Kejar- mengejar (car chase) di jalan raya dan segmen klimaksnya di bendungan sungguh menggugah nostalgia dua film pendahulunya. Sementara satu segmen aksi seru di pesawat lebih terlihat seperti film-film aksi “Marvel” ketimbang Terminator. Namun, tetap saja jika mau dibandingkan, aksi dua seri orisinalnya jauh lebih superior. Satu lagi adalah musik tema. Salah satu kekuatan dua film aslinya adalah score-nya. Kini terasa melempem.

Repetitif dan sedikit menggugah nostalgia, seperti judulnya, Terminator: Dark Fate tidak lebih baik dari semua sekuel setelah T2, dan hanya menegaskan bahwa dua film pertamanya adalah satu fenomena dalam sejarah medium film. Satu hal yang berbeda dalam film ini hanyalah unsur negara Meksiko. Mengapa terminator super dan buruannya harus orang Meksiko? Sindiran untuk Trump mungkin? Ini tentu ranah diskusi yang berbeda. Satu hal yang jelas, masa depan belum pasti, semua serba abu-abu, dan bahaya dari masa datang setiap saat masih mengancam. The storm will never end. “Kita harus selalu bersiaga”, begitu kata Sarah Connor. Ucapan Sarah memang ada benarnya buat umat manusia kini.
