Setelah sukses dengan Get Out (2017), Jordan Peele kini kembali dengan film horor terbarunya, Us (2019) yang naskahnya kembali ia tulis sendiri. Berbujet US$ 20 juta, film ini juga kembali diproduseri Peele sendiri bersama produser kenamaan, Jason Blum dan Sean McKittrick. Film ini sendiri dibintangi Lupita Nyong’ O, Winston Duke, dan Elizabeth Moss. Get Out mendapat pujian selangit dari para ktitikus dan banyak festival film karena keunikan temanya, Us rupanya membuktikan sekali lagi jika Peele memiliki talenta yang tak bisa dianggap remeh.

Dikisahkan Adelaide berlibur bersama keluarganya di sebuah kota kecil di tepi pantai. Adelaide merasakan beberapa kejanggalan aneh selama di sana yang dianggap sang suami hanya kecemasan berlebihan. Tidak hingga suatu malam, seorang keluarga misterius meneror mereka.

Hanya itu plotnya? Tentu tidak. Plotnya justru lebih kompleks dari yang kita bayangkan. Awal kisahnya memang boleh dibilang sedikit datar karena perpindahan alur plot menuju konflik yang terasa cukup lama. Tapi setelahnya, kisah bisa dibilang berjalan nonstop tanpa henti! Ketegangan demi ketegangan terus disajikan dengan pertanyaan besar di otak kita tentang sosok-sosok yang meneror mereka. Berjalannya cerita, bukannya semakin terkuak justru misteri semakin menjadi. Sang sineas mampu mempermainkan plotnya dengan diimbangi oleh aksi-aksi “horor” yang berkelas. Tanpa efek visual serta trik horor modern, namun Peele mampu menampilkan efek teror luar biasa, tidak hanya para pemain dalam cerita tapi juga penonton. Persis seperti Get Out, sisipan komedinya dikemas secara halus dan brilian meski aksinya serius atau bahkan brutal sekalipun. Kita bahkan nyaris menikmatinya.

Jika sudah menonton Get Out, kita tentu sadar benar jika Peele menampilkan segala sesuatunya tidak seperti yang tampak dalam kisahnya. Semuanya serba simbolik. Hebatnya, sang sineas tidak terjebak dalam tema yang sama, “black power”, yang kini tengah panas-panasnya dalam industri film Hollywood. Sekalipun para pemain utamanya berkulit hitam, namun kisahnya ternyata adalah bukan tentang mereka. Kepada mereka Adelaide bertanya, “apa yang kalian inginkan dan siapa kalian? Dijawab dengan sangat gamblang, “Amerika!”. Kita tidak berbicara soal ini lebih jauh tapi tak sulit untuk bisa melihat bahwa para peneror adalah metafora alam bawah sadar masyarakat AS yang merupakan bentuk ketakutan mereka terhadap sesuatu yang dianggap mengancam kenyamanan mereka. Boleh dibilang ketakutan itu hanya ada dalam pikiran mereka sendiri. Musuh mereka sejatinya adalah mereka sendiri. Judulnya saja sudah US, “United States”.

Us adalah satu lagi horor-thriller cerdas dari sang sineas yang tidak hanya segar untuk genrenya, namun juga kedalaman kontennya. Peele harus diakui sebagai salah satu sineas berbakat dalam industri film di AS kini. Tak banyak, film yang memiliki keseimbangan antara sisi seni dan komersial semacam ini sekaligus sebagai bentuk kritik sosial. Baik plot, opening credit, pengadeganan, dialog, aksi, musik, setting, kamera, dan editing, semuanya dikonsep secara matang dan unik, menjadi sebuah film dan tontonan yang sangat berkelas. Tak heran, jika tahun depan film ini bakal berjaya dalam ajang Golden Globe ataupun Academy Awards.
