Sejak Dumbo (2019), sineas kawakan Tim Burton lama tidak terlihat karyanya. Rupanya, ia tengah memproduksi seri perdananya bertitel Wednesday yang naskahnya diadaptasi lepas dengan mengambil satu tokoh dalam The Addams Family. Film rilisan Netflix ini terdiri dari 8 episode yang berdurasi rata-rata sekitar 50 menit. Film ini dibintangi sejumlah nama-nama besar, sebut saja Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christine, Christina Ricci, Catherine Zeta Jones, dan Luiz Guzman. Burton, lagi-lagi mampu memilih naskah yang pas untuk sentuhan artistiknya.

Akibat kelakuan brutalnya, Wednesday (Ortega) akhirnya dimasukkan ke akademi khusus Nevermore, yang juga eks sekolah kedua orang tuanya, Gomez (Guzman) dan Morticia (Jones). Niat kabur dari akademi urung dilakukan karena sang gadis terjebak dalam suatu petualangan misteri yang menantang adrenalinnya. Serangkaian pembunuhan serial yang dilakukan sesosok monster yang terkait erat dengan sekolah dan masa lalu orang tuanya. Wednesday yang dingin, cuek, dan tak suka bergaul, dipaksa untuk berhadapan dengan rekan-rekan satu sekolahnya yang juga tidak normal seperti dirinya. Dengan segala keterbatasan dan pengawasan ketat dari sang kepala sekolah (Christine), Wednesday pun memulai investigasinya.

Satu poin utama yang menjadi kekuatan terbesar seri ini adalah sang sineas sendiri. Ciri Burton ada pada semua pengadeganannya, tanpa terkecuali. Bagi fans sang sineas, tentu paham betul bahwa mise_en_scene bergaya ekspresionis/gotik yang gelap dan suram menjadi trademark-nya. Dari penampilan visual karakter (busana dan make-up), setting eksterior dan interior, low key lighting, hingga tentu saja ilustrasi musik melalui kolaborator tetapnya, Danny Elfman. Burton tampak bersenang-senang dalam debut serinya kali ini, walau, ia hanya mengarahkan 4 episode awal saja.

Artistik demikian berkelas, namun sayangnya tidak diikuti naskahnya yang memiliki beberapa kelemahan. Secara umum, sisi misteri dan investigasinya tersaji tak buruk dengan dialog-dialog spontan sang protagonis yang jujur, pedas, dan tegas. Satu contoh sempurna adalah chemistry dialog saling serang antara Wednesday dengan rekan satu kamarnya (Enid) yang tersaji begitu menggemaskan. Ini rupanya tidak diikuti oleh intensitas ketegangan dan sisi misteri yang kurang menggigit. Jujur saja, bagi penikmat film sejati, bisa jadi sudah mampu mengantisipasi “sang pelaku” sejak episode awal. Kerumitan kisahnya yang mengalir kesana kemari, kerap kurang berdasar menjadi satu hal yang menggangu. Wednesday seringkali asal omong, ceplas ceplos, dan menuduh tanpa pikir panjang, dan dalam beberapa momen ini terasa repetitif (baca: bosan). Twist kisahnya mudah terbaca dan tidak lagi mengejutkan.

Wednesday memiliki stempel khas artistik sang sineas (Burton) dengan dukungan sisi misteri dan investigasi serta penampilan dingin memikat dari sang bintang (Jenna Ortega). Menjaga intensitas ketegangan dan misteri sedemikian panjang (8 episode) memang bukan hal sepele. Burton menambal semua kelemahannya melalui pendekatan artistik serta selipan humornya (dialog). Satu catatan besar juga ada pada sang bintang Jenna Ortega yang bermain brilian sebagai Wednesday, dan satu lagi, rekan satu kamarnya, Enid, (Emma Myers) yang selalu mencuri perhatian kita. Bagi fans sang sineas, Wednesday adalah satu tontonan yang tak bisa dilewatkan.
