Marvel Studios kembali merilis film terbarunya yang terbilang paling unik. Film berdurasi 53 menit yang ditujukan untuk platform Disney + ini bertajuk special presentation, walau kisahnya masih kontinuiti dengan Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Werewolf by Night diarahkan oleh Michael Giacchino. Giacchino?? Bukankan dia adalah seorang komposer? Betul, nama ini adalah orang yang sama. Film ini dibintangi aktor kondang asal Mexico, Gael Garcia Bernal, didampingi Laura Donnely, dan Harriet Sansom Harris. Lalu, sejauh apa keunikan filmnya?

“Good luck, I’ll be rotting for you”

Pada satu masa dan tempat, seorang pemburu monster legendaris, Ullyses Bloodstone akhirnya tutup usia di mansion-nya. Ullyses meninggalkan satu artefak maha ampuh bernama bloodstone yang konon bisa membunuh monster sekuat apapun. Sang janda, Verussa (Harris) mengundang seluruh pemburu monster kelas satu untuk mengukuhkan siapa yang berhak atas artefak tersebut. Jack Russel (Bernal) adalah salah satu yang diundang, termasuk pula putri Ullyses, Elsa (Donnely). Untuk mendapatkan artefak tersebut, para pemburu harus mengalahkan seekor monster tangguh yang disekap dalam labirin. Protagonis kita, Jack, ternyata memilik agenda lain dan ia rupanya bukan seperti yang kita pikir.

Wow. Sungguh menyenangkan melihat Marvel Studios yang kini telah menjadi studio raksasa, bermain-main dengan medium film dan semesta sinematiknya. Tercatat, Werewolf by Night adalah satu karya MCU yang memiliki tribute klasik paling kental, dan jika boleh saya bilang, paling passionate terhadap medium film. Peran sang produser jenius, Kevin Feige masih ada di balik semua pencapaian ini. Tidak hanya secara cerita, namun secara estetik pun menggunakan pendekatan klasik.

Bagi fans penikmat horor klasik Hollywood era 1930-an atau film klasik secara umum, ini adalah waktu kalian untuk bersenang-senang. Hanya sayangnya, durasi film ini hanya 50 menit. Sejak opening logo Marvel Studios, nuansa genre horor klasik telah terasa. Dengan balutan warna hitam putih, akur kisahnya bertutur sederhana dan lugas dengan dukungan set khas ala horor klasik dengan sentuhan ekspresionisnya. Bahkan hingga dialog dan akting pun terasa sekali membawa nuansa eranya. Aksinya disajikan begitu menegangkan dan intens dengan beberapa twist di pertengahan jalan. Bicara ilustrasi musik yang juga diaransemen sang sineas, jelas tak perlu komentar lagi, sensasinya sama persis ketika kita menonton film horor masanya. Ending-nya pun masih memberikan kejutan estetik yang tak disangka-sangka, diiringi lagu ikonik Somewhere Over the Rainbow (The Wizard of Oz).

Melalui tribute dan pendekatan estetik klasiknya, Werewolf by Night adalah salah satu produk MCU terbaik. Film macam ini yang rasanya ditunggu penikmat film sejati sekaligus fans MCU. Melalui sukses film dan serinya, MCU kini telah berada di wilayah teritori baru yang belum tersentuh pembuat film mana pun. Dengan bermodal bujet dan semesta sinematiknya, MCU semudah menjetikkan jari untuk memproduksi film-film dengan gaya dan teknik apapun. Harapan saya adalah para pembuat filmnya lebih berani lagi melakukan terobosan serta eksplorasi tema dan estetik untuk menyumbang sesuatu baru dan segar bagi medium film. Werewolf by Night, termasuk seri WandaVision dan LOKI adalah satu contoh terbaiknya.
