Marvel Studios has now released its newest film, considered the most unique. The 53-minute film, intended for the Disney+ platform, is a special presentation, even though the story is still in continuity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Michael Giacchino directs werewolf by Night. Giacchino?? Isn’t he a composer? That’s right, and this name is the same person. This film stars the famous Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal, accompanied by Laura Donnely and Harriet Sansom Harris. Then, to what extent is the uniqueness of the film?

At one time and place, a legendary monster hunter, Ullyses Bloodstone, finally died in his mansion. Ullyses left a powerful artifact called a bloodstone which is said to be able to kill any monster. The widow, Verussa (Harris), invites all first-class monster hunters to confirm who has the right to the artifact. Jack Russell (Bernal) is one of those invited, as is Ullyses’ daughter, Elsa (Donnely). To get the artifact, hunters must defeat a formidable monster trapped in a labyrinth. Our protagonist, Jack, has a different agenda and is not what we thought he was.

Wow. It’s nice to see Marvel Studios, which has now become a giant studio, playing with the film medium and its cinematic universe. Werewolf by Night is one of the MCU works with the thickest classic tribute, and if I may say, the most passionate about the film medium. The role of the genius producer Kevin Feige is still behind all these achievements. Not only in the story but also aesthetically using a classic approach.

This is your time to have fun for fans of classic 1930’s Hollywood horror connoisseurs or classic films. Unfortunately, the duration of this film is only 50 minutes. Since the opening of the Marvel Studios logo, the feel of the classic horror genre has been felt. With black and white color, the story is simple with the support of a classic horror-style set. Even the dialogues and acting carry the nuances of the era. The action is intense, with a few twists in the middle of the road. Speaking of the score, which the filmmaker also arranged, there is no need to comment anymore, and the sensation is the same when we watch classic horror films. The ending still gives an unexpected aesthetic surprise, accompanied by the iconic song Somewhere Over the Rainbow (The Wizard of Oz).

Through its tribute and classic aesthetic approach, Werewolf by Night is one of the best MCU products. This kind of film is what true film connoisseurs and MCU fans have been waiting for. Through the success of the movies and series, the MCU is now in new territory that any filmmaker has not touched. With a robust budget and cinematic universe, MCU is as easy as snapping a finger to produce films of any style and technique. I hope the filmmakers will be more daring to make breakthroughs and explore themes and aesthetics to contribute something new and fresh to the medium. Werewolf by Night, including the WandaVision and LOKI series, are one of the best examples.
