Woman of the Hour adalah film thriller kriminal debut sutradara dari aktris ternama Anna Kendrick yang juga turut bermain. Naskah film ini diadaptasi dari peristiwa nyata seorang pembunuh belasan gadis muda yang terlibat dalam acara show populer “The Dating Game” pada era 1970-an. Selain Kendrick, bermain pula Daniel Zovatto, Nicolette Robinson, serta Tony Hale. Akankah ini menjadi debut yang solid untuk sang bintang?

Di usia mudanya, Cheryl (Kendrick) berusaha keras untuk berkarir di dunia akting, namun usahanya belum berbuah hasil. Suatu ketika, satu rekannya mengajaknya untuk ikut dalam acara televisi populer “The Dating Game” dengan tujuan untuk menaikkan daya jual Cheryl di dunia akting kelak. Dengan berat hati, Cheryl pun mengikuti anjuran rekannya, namun siapa sangka, satu di antara peserta rupanya adalah seorang pembunuh serial yang telah membunuh dan menganiaya belasan gadis muda.

Film senada sudah puluhan kali diproduksi, namun kisah film ini berbeda degan lebih fokus ke para korban perempuan mudanya (umumnya fokus pada figur detektif). Premis yang terhitung segar ini, dikemas menarik oleh sang sineas melalui cara bertutur “nonlinier”. Plot dengan fokus karakter Cheryl menjadi pondasi utama plotnya, sementara subplot aksi-aksi sang pembunuh dengan para korbannya dari berbagai latar waktu disajikan secara bergantian. Memang gaya bertuturnya tak sepenuhnya bisa disebut murni nonlinier karena kita menyadari adanya peralihan waktu (kilas balik/depan), melalui teks latar waktu yang muncul di awal segmennya. Potong silang segmennya ini yang membuat kisahnya mengalir dengan intens, walau ending-nya sedikit antiklimaks.

Dari semua kastingnya adalah Kendrick sendiri yang tampil impresif sebagai woman of the hour dalam momen-momen acara pertunjukan. Saking dominan penampilannya memberi kesan bahwa kelak karirnya bakal naik setelah ini, namun rupanya justru sebaliknya. Peran sang pembunuh, Rodney Alcala, mampu dimainkan baik oleh sang aktor, Daniel Zovatto, namun kurang terdapat latar cerita yang menjelaskan mengapa ia berani nekat dan begitu percaya diri tampil di depan publik pada acara televisi yang ditonton jutaan orang. Ini agak terasa janggal melihat mood sang pembunuh yang kadang masih terlihat “lembek” dalam beberapa momen. Oke, ini kisah nyata dan Rodney memang bukan sosok psikopat jenius fiktif macam Hannibal Lecter.

Woman of the Hour adalah sebuah debut impresif dari Anna Kendrick melalui tema perempuan dan permainan waktunya, walau resolusinya kurang membekas. Talenta sang sineas jelas tak bisa dianggap remeh dan terlihat sekali kepeduliannya terhadap sosok perempuan. Patut dinanti, karya sang sineas selanjutnya dengan ekspektasi tinggi. Kendrick yang selalu tampil enerjik dalam film-filmnya, seperti Up in the Air, seri Pitch Perfect, hingga A Simple Favor, rupanya masih terbawa ketika ia mengarahkan film debutnya.
