The imagination of a wildly creative girl comes alive in an amusement park.

Wonder Park merupakan film drama fantasi produksi kolaborasi, Paramount Animation dan Nickelodeon Movies. Terakhir, dua studio ini memproduksi film animasi berkualitas yang juga peraih nominasi Oscar, Jimmy Neutron (2001) yang dirilis nyaris dua dekade lalu. Seperti halnya Neutron, Wonder Park kabarnya juga merupakan pilot project untuk seri animasi televisi yang juga akan dirilis tahun ini. Film ini diisi suara oleh beberapa bintang kenamaan, seperti Jennifer Garner, Matthew Broderick, Mila Kunis, dan Ken Jeong. Persaingan berat di arena animasi yang kini didominasi Pixar dan Walt Disney Animation Studios, lalu apakah Wonder Park bakal bisa bersaing. Rasanya tidak.

Alkisah, June adalah seorang bocah perempuan imajinatif dan ceria, yang bersama ibunya suka merancang taman bermain anak-anak (theme park). Suatu ketika, sang ibu jatuh sakit dan harus dirawat secara intensif di luar kota. June yang kehilangan sang ibu, berubah drastis menjadi pendiam dan meninggalkan semua hobinya. Ketika sang ayah memaksa June untuk pergi ke acara “kamping matematika” bersama semua rekan sekolahnya, ia jsutru menyelinap keluar dari rombongan dan berjalan kembali ke rumahnya. June tanpa ia sadari memasuki sebuah hutan yang berisi taman bermain misterius bernama Wonder Park.

Plot bertema sejenis sudah terlalu banyak variannya. Seorang bocah yang memiliki masalah di alam nyata, namun ia memasuki alam fantasi (atau alam bawah sadar) dan belajar tentang hidup di sana hingga ia bisa bersikap dewasa. Plot “The Wizard of Oz” sejenis, tentu sudah tak terhitung banyaknya, sebut saja Alice in Wonderland lalu sekuelnya, seri Narnia, hingga baru lalu, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms dan The Lego Movie. Namun, tercatat dua film, banyak memiliki kemiripan dengan tema film ini, yakni I Kill Giants dan A Monster Called, walau dua film ini temanya jauh lebih gelap.

Bicara plot dan temanya, I Kill Giants dan A Monster Called jelas terlalu superior jika dibandingkan dengan film ini. Dengan plotnya yang kurang greget, Wonder Park memang terasa sebagai film anak-anak yang menghibur walau sebenarnya punya potensi lebih dari ini. Plotnya justru banyak didominasi aksi-aksi “tak penting” tanpa henti untuk mendukung kisahnya yang tanggung dan tak sulit diantisipasi. Dengan ending yang ditawarkan, plot filmnya juga tampak terasa bermain aman. Tentu bisa dimaklumi, mengingat film ini adalah proyek awal seri animasinya.

Wonder Park tidak menawarkan sesuatu yang baru untuk temanya yang suram, namun bisa jadi bakal menghibur penonton anak-anak melalui tokoh-tokohnya yang unik dan tone penuh warna. Dengan pencapaian gambar animasi 3D-nya yang jauh dari kata buruk, Wonder Park sudah bisa bersaing dengan film-film besar Disney Animation dan Pixar. Sementara untuk penonton dewasa, film ini terasa sangat datar dan membosankan karena kisahnya yang kurang menggigit. Terbukti ketika saya menonton, beberapa penonton dewasa di bangku depan tertidur, lengkap dengan suara back sound yang khas.
