Bagi penyuka film biografi dan olahraga renang, rasanya patut menyimak film menghibur dan menyentuh yang satu ini. Young Woman and the Sea adalah film biografi olahraga yang diarahkan oleh Jeff Nathanson serta diproduksi produser kawakan, Jerry Bruckheimer. Film ini dibintangi Daisy Ridlley, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, serta Glenn Fleshler. Film yang diproduksi studio Walt Disney ini dirilis di platform Disney + minggu ini. Apakah film biografi ini mampu menyajikan sebuah drama menyentuh seperti film-filmnya kebanyakan?

Trudy Ederly (Ridley) adalah seorang gadis muda yang terobsesi dengan olahraga renang. Masa kecilnya yang pernah menderita penyakit campak menjadikan Truly dibatasi geraknya oleh orang tuanya. Namun, ini tidak membuat Trudy menyerah hingga akhirnya bisa berlatih bahkan usaha kerasnya menjadikan dirinya juara nasional dan memecahkan rekor dunia. Setelah gagal dalam olimpiade Paris tahun 1924, Trudy mengincar untuk menjadi perempuan pertama di dunia yang bisa menyeberangi Selat Inggris sepanjang 24 mil.

Kisah biografi dengan formula plot tipikal “from zero to hero” sudah menjadi hal yang jamak, tidak terkecuali film ini. Satu hal yang membedakan adalah jenis olahraganya yang rasanya jarang sekali diangkat dalam medium film. Terakhir, film biografi senada adalah The Swimmer (2022) dan Nyad (2023). Young Woman and the Sea mengangkat kisah atlit renang perempuan paling fenomenal dan berpengaruh dalam sejarah AS. Untuk figur sebesar sang tokoh, apa yang disajikan dalam kisahnya tidaklah terasa membekas jika dibandingkan visualisasi footage dalam ending credit-nya yang spektakuler. Sekalipun sang bintang (Ridley) bermain menawan.

Pencapaian teknisnya adalah satu hal yang justru mencuri perhatian. Setting berlatar tahun 1920-an di wilayah Coney Island, New York disajikan begitu meyakinkan, walau hanya memperlihatkan segelintir sudut-sudut kota dan pantai. Teknik montage tak pernah lepas dari genre ini dan film ini menampilkan beberapa montage latihan dan lomba yang amt menawan. Setting di laut lepas menjadi dominasi set-nya dengan beberapa properti kapal boat di eranya. Adegan klimaksnya boleh jadi adalah aksi paling menyentuh ketika para warga berduyun-duyun menyalakan api unggun untuk memberi sinyal pada Trudy. Walau sisi teknisnya banyak mendukung kisahnya, namun tidak lantas membuat film ini spesial.

Young Woman and the Sea tidak banyak memberikan sentuhan segar bagi genrenya, selain kisah menggugah dan drama perjuangan protagonis meraih mimpi serta isu kesetaraan gender. Film ini makin menegaskan bahwa industri film Hollywood pada satu dekade belakangan ini banyak memberi ruang pada sosok perempuan tangguh. Belum pernah sebelumnya, sosok perempuan begitu dominan dalam film seperti saat ini, dan dalam banyak kasus, fenomena ini memang terasa menyegarkan. Yah, euforia ini kita nikmati saja untuk saat ini, entah berapa lama ini bakal menjadi tren.
