Di awal pembuka tahun Walt Disney Animation Studios membuka dengan film animasinya, Zootopia. Studio animasi ini seperti kita tahu sebelumnya sukses besar dengan film-filmnya macam Tangled, Frozen, Wreck It Ralph, dan Big Hero Six. Terlalu banyak pesaing studio animasi saat ini termasuk studio Pixar sendiri yang masih ada di bawah payung Disney. Bersaing dengan Kung Fu Panda 3 di negara asalnya rasanya berat bagi animasi baru nonfranchise ini untuk bersaing secara komersil.

Alkisah Judy adalah seekor kelinci yang sejak kecil ingin bercita-cita menjadi polisi. Berkat kerja keras keinginan tercapai dan ia ditempatkan di Zootopia, sebuah kota masa depan dimana semua hewan baik predator dan nonpredator hidup berdampingan secara harmonis. Judi yang tugas awalnya menjadi polisi tilang suatu ketika mendapatkan kesempatan besar untuk menyelidiki hilangnya Mr. Otterton dengan taruhan karirnya. Judi terpaksa bekerja sama dengan pedagang ilegal, Nick, seekor rubah, karena ia memiliki petunjuk awal dari sini sebelum mereka berdua terjebak dalam situasi yang lebih besar.

Film dibuka dengan sangat menarik menggambarkan proses bagaimana Judy, seekor kelinci, harus berjuang keras melawan binatang yang jauh lebih besar darinya untuk lulus menjadi polisi. Kisahnya tampak semakin menjanjikan ketika Judy datang ke Kota Zootopia yang disajikan amat mengesankan dan penuh warna. Setelah ini kisahnya justru berjalan relatif lambat terlebih setelah konflik cerita mulai berjalan. Aksi yang kurang menarik serta satu adegan komedi yang ternyata sama dengan sajian trailernya menambah rasa kantuk semakin hebat. Jalannya penyelidikan yang seharusnya bisa menggugah rasa penasaran justru malah membuat kita terlelap. Unsur komedi pun hanya berupa tempelan dan potongan yang tak ada hubungan dengan inti cerita yang sesekali memang memancing tawa. Tidak ada yang baru dan menarik untuk menjadi perhatian. Kisahnya tidak dibuat sederhana namun justru terlihat rumit dan membingungkan. Di Zootopia, apapun bisa terjadi dan siapapun bisa menjadi siapa saja, mau kejutan apa lagi.

Diluar pencapaian visualnya yang mengesankan Zootopia menawarkan kisah yang terlalu rumit dan gelap untuk anak-anak serta membosankan untuk penonton dewasa. Walau premisnya sebenarnya tak masuk akal namun pesannya sebenarnya cukup baik menggambarkan bagaimana semua spesies baik besar maupun kecil, bisa hidup berdampingan. Hmm.. aneh juga kita tidak melihat hewan reptil, seperti ular dan buaya di film ini. Bisa dimengerti sekarang mengapa trailer untuk filmnya dipilih satu adegan penuh ketika Judi dan Nick bersama si “slow”, Flash, karena sepertinya mereka kurang percaya diri dengan filmnya. Kita lihat saja apakah film ini mampu sukses secara komersil seperti film-film sebelumnya.
